Arrow need some clutch help

I replaced my clutch with a Mazda OEM one with my rebuilt engine 9K miles ago(bad idea). My clutch has been slipping, and Ive decided to replace just the disc with something a little more heavy duty, and keep the stock PP since its so new. I do not want a puck clutch, this is my daily driver.

I want some recommendations on a good clutch that you can get just the disc for, and where to get it. Ive been looking at the RB HD street/strip disc.

Doesnt anybody have anything to say? All I want to hear is some recommendations on a clutch that I can get the disc without the PP for.

IF the clutch is slipping but youve not been abusive to it, how do you know its not the PP's fault? Granted its probably not, but still. I doubt youll find many *aftermarket* discs available with no PP. THE PP is responsible for 1/2 the equation, remember, it maintains the holding power/clamping force. DOnt get me wrong, I reuse PP's all the time, in a stock app;lication. BUt for an aftermarket disc, Id get teh matching PP for it. Just my opinion. I doubt youll find much of anything except stock-type replacements available as disc only.

Thumbs up

I know guys with a stock clutch but more agressive PP that like it just fine, so that may also be an option.

But you can go to carparts.com and get just the ACT disk I believe. I'd go with ACT.

It sounds like you need a street/strip setup. They offer greater clamping power and can take much more abuse.

RP & RB both offer street/strip setups as well as others.

If its slipping after only 9k, (and you haven't been abusing it) you might want to check the flywheel friction surface thickness. If its below spec it would cause a new clutch to begin slipping prematurely.

The stock clutch can take a fair ammount of abuse (I have a buddy who uses one in his IT car) and unless your turning like 500 lbs of torque or doing foot-to -the-floor power upshifts it's not really necessary to upgrade. Plus, it keeps you from wailing on the drivetrain. It forces you to be smooth - which is faster than beating on your Trans/clutch.

That being said, I have a RB S/S setup on my 7, and its great. Quick engagment, durable. But I upgraded simply for the feel, not because I had to.

My problems with my current clutch are like this. If I am not PERFECT with engaging the clutch when taking off, it slips horrible, and usually smokes a bit too. Thats not dropping the clutch at high rpm's either, just a normal start at 3K-3500 rpm. My car is far from stock, and I am very close to the limit on a stock clutch. It holds up fine during normal driving, but I have to let ti cool between drag starts. After 2 launches within a few minutes, the clutch just starts slipping until it cools down. I dont ride the clutch either.

The bad news is Im replacing my back tires for Christmas with wider, and much grippier tires. I doubt this clutch will hold up with these tires.

Mine went 5000km ago

And I replaced it with a OEM style unit, now I think that it is starting to slip already! I had the flywheel turned and replaced the entre assembly as a matched set.

But now especially when I back up a slight hill, it chatters and slips a little and when get out there is a distinct smell of burning friction pad!

This surprises me after only 5000km! I'm sure that my installation is NOT at fault so what gives?

Is this the shades of what Mazdaspeed7 is experiancing and would a change of only the disc cure the problem?

I was looking at the RB stuff, and Im going to check the condition of my disc, and unless the disc is worn bad, I think Im getting a RB S/S PP. Price was one of my main concerns here, as I dont have much money but the RB PP is very reasonably priced, unlike the ACT PP.
