Need reverse lights to work for inspection
If it were a series four car, I'd go to the switch connector and see if the BY wire has 12v when the key is to ON. If it does, then I'd jumper the RG and BY together bypassing the switch and see if the backup lights work or not with the key to ON. IF they do light up, then heck I don't know what you'd do. Maybe manipulate the switch a number of times to get it to work better or just buy another switch from Mazdatrix or your local dealer.
Series five might use different colors etc. That's someone elses problem

Remember, you have a back-up switch and a reverse/5th switch. Two different animals on an S4...Hopefully Hailers got the wire colors right so you don't get confused. I'm sure he did...

Yeah, that petroleum thing was kinda an oily subject, eh?
I have the utmost faith in your ability to read a schematic, Hailers...But just in case, I had to run out to the car to get mine, lol...
Wire colors are right, just remember that the actual wires at the switch will be different colors (red wires with bullet connectors), because at that point, you're on the tranny's harness, NOT the car's harness that the FSM shows...

Both the 87 and the 88 model showed the BULLET connectors and the wire colors. You can relax now. Calm down. P.S. we don't use petroleum jelly on hydraulic fittings/o'rings, just in case your worried. Fifty six o six for that.

BTW, to the original poster, I wrote "left side of the tranny" for the back-up lights switch near the switch symbol on my schematic. I don't remember writing that, but at some point in the past (probably when the tranny was out & I was reading out the switches) I did, FWIW...
I'm not the one that was arguing the merits of petroleum jelly, Hailers, I think you have me confused with someone else. It was the water thermo switch thread (that you need to finish reading) that spawned our latest civil discussion

I'd rather work with hydrazine than skydrol. Skydrol is a known killer! I've gotta revisit that water thermo switch deal. Me civil? Nah. I gave civil up as a lost cause on this forum.
