TII 'Vert ?

I have an '89 convertible sitting with no engine or tranny and I would like to get it running again this spring. Ideally I would like to do the TII swap, of course. And I was just wondering if there are any differences in doing this swap into a convertible rather than a hatchback. I know there are some TII 'verts on here. Just let me know what snags I am going to run into. Thanks.

Cool. Someone told me that there were some differences, but I didn't exactly trust this guys opinion. So thank you for clearing that up.

It sucks 'cause I have an '87 TII sitting right next to the 'vert right now, but I know you can't put s4 stuff into an s5. And I like my convertible way more, so I'm gonna sell my TII to make my 'vert a TII. Interesting situation, huh? This is what happens when you can't make up your mind.

your biggest problem will be finding a 89-91 t2 ecu and harness. You will be better of getting a standalone to run it. A used microtech would be the cheapest option. But yes the turbo vert is the best second gen you can have.

I read somewhere (possibly on rotary resurrection) that the S5 'vert ecu will work with the TII setup. . . is that not true?

It's sort of true. The S5 Vert ECUs are designed for the NA engine, but they also have a knock sensor, which is helpful for a T2 engine. Personally, I plan on running a T2 engine with my vert ECU until i get afford a standalone.

You actually can use the S4 stuff in the S5 car, there are some differences, but if you follow what's on Kevin's site you should be okay.

The S4 vert ECUs are the ones that are supposedly mapped for the turbo. I'm sure there is a way that you can make the S5 vert ECU work with the swap, but I wouldn't do it personally. www.rotaryresurrection.com has some awesome info on the swap.

Like Bukwild said, your best bet is to go standalone, or find an S5 ECU and harness. I might actually have an S5 TII harness and ECU to sell. I just have to make sure that my ECU works and that my tuner (who installed my Haltech) didn't cut any connectors off the harness for the Haltech install. PM me if you're interested and I'll take a look at them.

you CAN swap in the S4 motor and tranny into the S5 if you have a TII donor car WITH ECU.....here is a visual of the harness diff. for reference: the only wiring needed to do is for the BODY-Electrical.

I just got my s4 Turbo vert running last night. It runs fine on my vert ecu, I just have to get the idle under control, its kinda crazy. I've heard the s5 vert ecus will not work, I do not know why but thats what I hear from ever guru. Look on ebay, theres always s5 jdm ecu's with knightsport chips and stuff like that.

I never trusted using the vert ecu. To me it was not worth is to try and run my rebuilt t2 motor which cost me 2k on something that would work ok. I see used microtech's in the for sale section for 600-700 all the time. Spending the extra money to get the standalone will save you a motor. So basically the standalone pays for itself.

Yeah, good point. I didn't know that the 'vert ecu only worked "okay," my understanding was that it was just as good as the TII one. That being the case, I don't think I'll try it.
