Unhappy need a new clutch, please help clairify some things

Ok, so I let my roomate borrow my car ('91 N/A coupe, stock) a couple weekends ago. I get it back and the clutch is slipping, I mean I can floor it in 4th gear and its like I am in neutral.

Anyway, I did a search for clutch replacement and did a lot of reading. I got a lot of good info, but need some clarification on some things.

First, I am a dunce when it comes to cars, but I am not paying some jackass to rip me off on an install, I am about to graduate with an engineering bachelors degree, I can figure this **** out. Also, this car is my "daily driver", despite the fact I can only get out on weekends. I don't autocross, or drag, or anything; however, I do like to drive fairly hard on the street.

Question: What clutch setup do I get? I kept reading about the ACT street/strip setup, and it sounds good to me; however, I do not want to buy something and not use it the way (i.e. as hard) it is supposed to be used and end up screwing up something else. I think I want a full disc and none of this "puck" action. I am hoping my flywheel is in good shape, just needing a resurface. So, do I go with the slightly upgraded ACT setup or something more totally stock? If more stock, what is a great stock setup?

Oh yea, for reference sake, I am looking at the ACT ZX2-HDSS setup. Which is the "heavy duty" PP from ACT. But I guess the "extreme" PP might work also (ZX2-XTSS).

Hoping I get some answers...

The clutch replacement isn't bad...

I did mine myself and just used a $120 replacement package from clutchmasters, it worked fine for a mildly modified N/A

The biggest problem is getting the 2 tools to remove your flywheel

I love ACT products, and for your application I would go with the HD pressure plate and the full-face disc....there is no need for a puck for your particular needs, and I do not think you would enjoy one.

I did mine not too long ago, I used a clutchmasters setup, they change the pivot point on the diaphram levers and set it up with heavier springs, less pedal pressure. The one problem I ran into, is when I had the flywheel turned, the DH turned it on a brake lathe, and as a result, the runout was .005-.035" causing a heavy imbalance in the engine. no I didn't check it before I put it back together. The guy was supposed to be good reputable shop. As a result, I had to have it resurfaced again by a shop that used a flywheel lathe and they got it to within .0005"--much better. Make sure they're using a flywheel lathe!!!

ACT is some good ****!I had to replace my clutch and I went with a ACT 6 Puck Street/Strip Clutch.RX7 Trix has some killer prices on them and there great with shipping. As of right now I dont like how its driving at the time but it will be necessary for the amount of power I want to put down.I street race and drag race though so its not necessary if you don't race.RXSE7N gave great advice stick with it.

I've got the ACT S/S Clutch (full disk and HD plate) in my TII and I absolutely love it.

There's about 20 bolts to remove the tranny, so it's really straight forward. Full face Street/Strip clutches are awesome. If you've got an N/A I have a brand new RacingBeat one for sale. PM or email me: Nick_Romary@Hotmail.com

Thanks for all the replies, I am going to go with the ACT HD setup with full face "sprung" disc (thanks jreynish). I am not worried about getting this done, between the Haynes and FSM and this forum and my brain, I will figure it out.

don't do the unsprung clutch if you want to drive it on the street the unsprung clutches aren't very streetable they engage rather harshly and will almost always chirp your tires! plus changing gears is rough as well as it engages very abruptly!

However if you have the sprung clutch then you will not have this problem and still have the same clamping pressure!
