need massive help with interior

i need a lot of help with the interior. the owner before me tried to paint the dash and door handles himself. someone told me that if i sand the paint down, then re spray paint it, it would come out better. is this true? also, is there any other way?

Hey Yelow,

There are a lot of guys on the stereo sound off circuit that repaint their interiors. Looks good , but these are mainly show cars. I don't know of any way to paint ( especially the door handles) your interior so it will last. I may be full of ****, but I've never found a good way to do it.
My advice would be to start scrounging the pick a parts and want adds and start collecting parts. The fabric panels ( headliners, door inserts, etc.) can be covered easy enough. Try to find the vinyl peices in the color you need. My last trip to pick a part, I found three rexs with gray interiors, enough peices to fix all the broken panels in my car.
Good luck, Dude.

Gregg

Chin up, Dude,

When I first started looking for interior parts, I thought all rexs' came with burgundy interiors.
I have to ammend my previous comment. You might get away with painting the plastic panels that don't see a lot of wear.
The flexible vinyl stuff is another story. There are vinyl dyes that work, sorta, for a while. Then you have the problem of color matching. If you replace peices in a 15 year old car with factory new, the colors won't match, because of age, fading, etc.
You might get away with painting the dash( can't tell you how long it will last due to sun-bake), vent covers, any rigid plastic peices that don't see a lot of wear.
Door pulls, arm rests, console lids, ............may look OK for a while, won't last.

Start looking and be patient, Dude! Maybe some of the guys on this site have peices lying around. I have a gray glovebox door you can have.

If so,..............damn............I'd be changin' that to gray or black ASAFP anyway!

Hey Dude,

Another option for relatively straight panels, (like the rear strut tower panels), is to cover them, with fabric or vinyl. Vinyl is easier because you can heat and stretch/ mold it.

I didn't mean to slag your car , Dude. I been broke, too.

Here's an idea. If you're needin' a job, check out the local trim shops( auto upholstery). Offer to do some grunt work( clean up, breakin down seats, lunch gopher, you know!) You will be workin' with guys that will have access to parts, WHOLESALE materials, and the knowledge to trick out your interior.

Just an idea, Gregg

In 2 weeks, I will have a burgundy dash from an '87 GXL I would let it go very cheap so I don't have to store it. There will also be many other interior parts. Let me know if you are interested.

I have had to repaint some of the center radio panels and ashtray. I found that if you clean with alcohol and then spray with gloss black it looks IDENTICAL,

ok here is a tip of all of those peeps who whted a good lookin interior that is close to stock lookin, but for those who wants a color change...

whem i started this project my car's interior was blue.. but some of the parts were faded. so i decided to go black.. but there was no way im paying hundred of dollars to for some used interior from some other old fc...so instead i re painted my dash, doorpanels, carpet, pretty much every thing with black dupli-color vinyl and fabric color paint.. and wow after 4 grueling hours uninstlling and reinstlling everuthing back inplace.. the result was astonishing.. i did like this stupid scracth test where id scracth the **** out of my new paint job, nd suprisingly none of the paint was on my finger nails.lol nor shown marks on the part tested...

so in conclusion i highly suggest DUPLI-COLOR VINYL AND FABRIC for those who wnts a colr chnge on their fc.. this stuff works like a charm.. people see my interior and they ask me who/ where did i tke me car's interior to be redone...so if you can afford 4 bux a can,.. do it.. i only needed 4 cans in all for the whole car.. have funn..

ohhh yeah,, ill post pics tommorrow so youll see how good it looks.. my camera sux at night time..

I 2 have a burgandy interior, and IT IS UGLY AS HELL. I've decided to re-paint it red and black. I talked to a lot of professional interior designers and they all say it should last at least 5 years. In my opinion, I'd rather re-do my paint job every 5 years than have a burgandy interior for even 1 year.

O, and the guy who wants to paint his interior Pink. MAN, you disgrace us all, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING! I'd take the burgandy, I mean seriosly who the hell are you richard simmons?!
