I think your transmission input shaft is still engaged in your clutch disc splines. The shaft penetrates through the opening in the pressure plate springs, and engages the clutch disc, with about 1" of the shaft's end riding in the bearing inside the motor's eccentric shaft. If you're leaving the transmission in the car, you need to raise the engine just enough to allow movement, and then pull it forward/raise it a little at a time to disenage the input shaft from the bearing and clutch disc, and then clear the pressure plate.

Following what Jim said:
Getting the transmission input shaft out of the clutch is fussy.
It has to come straight out.
Getting it back in later requires even more patience.

Just in case.......you need to put some type of support under the transmission. There is nothing supporting the transmission. Once the engine is parted from the transmission it will fall straight down on the ground if you don't support it with another jack/block of wood etc.

If there is nothing there right now, that could be why your having a problem seperating the engine from the transmission.

Also make sure the engine mount bolts/nuts are off.

Don't forget about the "hidden" tranny-to-engine bolt under (or near, can't remember) the starter (S4 NA cars).

This web site belongs to an individual who posts here frequently, and you'll find it very helpful. For your immediate question, go to the site, click on "Tech", then "Engine Removal". Paragraph 4 of that page answers your question.

To me, i think its easier to take them both out together... I mean, if you remove the fan & pulley and the radiator, you'll have enough room to pull them both out connected... that's how I did it...

The EMISSIONS HARNESS is removed from inside the car. You unplug it from the ECU etc and pull it out from the inside.

Some neanderthals like me always remove the wiring from the engine prior to pulling the engine. I'm going to pull the upper intake off anyway so why not get with the program and do it prior to pulling the engine, is the way I look at it. The wiring gets left in the car that way and stays plugged into the ECU etc.
