Need help with a quick decision...

So we went looking at an FC today, mostly for me to yank the engine out for use in my FB and to have a shell for an LS1 T56 swap when the FB is done.

It's the horrible champagne color with the hideous burgundy interior. The interior is pretty clean, with the exception of the usual rip on the drivers side seat.

It has 174,000 on it. It looks like it smacked a pole on the passenger front fender, so the fender will need to be replaced, and the front bumper cover probably will as well. There was one small spot of rust on the lower panel just in front of the driver's side rear fender. I pushed on it, and it's pretty soft... It seems like it ate all the way through.

The battery was dead, so the guy jump started it. White smoke came out the exhaust, but did not have any sort of smell to it, and cleared up after about a minute and a half of idling.

I searched it for structural rust and did not see any. Headlights raised and lowered fine. It appears it was in an accident at some point, as the paint on the drivers door and front drivers fender do not match. Also, the drivers side door does not line up well with the latch, requiring the door to be semi-lifted/muscled into place.

It is an 87 GXL model, with the five bolt wheels. Sunroof, electronic adjustable suspension, 5 speed.

Brand new exhaust, brand new alternator, aftermarket CD player and horrible boombox system strapped down in the back using the sunroof straps.

The guy was asking $1200, I offered him $1000, and he said he would have to check with his son (the owner of the car) to see if $1000 was acceptable to him, but he is "guessing it's probably not going to be o.k., he wants $1200."

What do you guys think? Is it worth the $1000?

yeah, with the questionable engine $1000 seems about right.

I haven't heard back from him yet to see if he'll do it or not.

I think that with a body like that, and a motor that smokes, its worth less than $1000, my opinion.
