Need help picking a direction to go....

Well after talking to this guy in my area, he is selling me a 1986 Mazda Rx-7 non turbo automatic.

It needs some work but that really isn't too much of a concern. My uncle been working on rotories for maybe 15 years now and can easily help me rebuild or replace parts.

I would love to turn this car into a road racing car/ drifting car. My question is what is the best route to go engine/drivetrain wise? Not looking for much power....I would be happy with 300hp to the rear if that is easy to do. Suspension? Steering?

Weak points that I should address (such as common problems/fixes).

Just trying to learn as much as I can about this car.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks
Alan

There is a lot of knowledge on the boards if you search wisely.

For starters, 300 hp you are looking at a turbo drivetrain swap, this will include a 5sp swap unless you can source an automatic for a turbo.

300whp or crank hp can be done with a t2 engine setup with a hybrid bnr type turbo. Remember the t2 dirveshaft and diff, and axles.

T2 = Turbo
NA= Non-Turbo
T4 = 86-88 model cars
T5 = 89-91 model cars

That would be S4 and S5... not T4 and T5

2-3000 for a T2 motor.......maybe a NA motor might be a better option

at the top of this section, are the sticky threads.

There you will find the FAQ for FC:
https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/frequently-asked-questions-2nd-generation-rx-7-faq-fc-494667/

This is a good start, but all the sticky threads will help you learn about the 2nd gen RX-7

If you want 300hp, turbo is pretty much teh only way to go. And will be cheaper in the long run.

Likley be cheaper to just hold out for an originally turbo FC. Buying a TII swap (again, engine, ECU, transmission, driveshaft) will be more expensive and more headaches then getting a car already turbo. Plus, automatics suck.
