Need Help to get car running right
Hey all, as some of you know my car has been smoking a little bit, smokes a little at start up, and I can get it to smoke pretty bad when it is sitting and I take it to 3grand let the revs fall to the high 1500rpm idle and take it back up to 3 grand. It doesn't emit any visable smoke when it is idling but you can smell it. I checked my TPS, my AFM, replaced my O2 sensor. I am checking for vacum leaks but no luck so far. The car is a 1987 NA w/ 159,800 miles, I checked the compression and it was 85-90 on all faces on both rotors when it was cold. And it started smoking a day after I changed the oil with Castrol GTX 20w-50.
I was wondering if the fast idle system could be causing me to burn oil like that, and cause my high idle all the time.
Can thing like the oil purge valve be checked and if so how do I do that?

Get the haynes manual or FSM for your car on www.fc3s.org under tech->manuals. Just get section about fuel and emissions
Make sure you have followed the FSM for setting the idle at 750 rpm
If you can't set it correctly (that is too high), then
your high idle could be caused by number of things:
1) bad thermowax. This devices keeps your idle high while engine is cold. After it's warmed up, the thermowax let go of the throttle plates, and you should get the 750 rpm idle
2) somebody tinkered with the little 8mm nut on top of the intake. If too much screwed in, it keeps the plates open too much, thus high idle. If it was not never touched, don't bother, it's probably ok.
3) vaccum leaks. Those cause high idles. Check for hissing and things of that nature around.
4) probably other things I can't think of.
BAC valve stuck open could also cause a high idle. So check the BAC per FSM.
Hope this helps,
