Uh,...The trans IS the gearbox. Do you mean the differential? ("rear end") If you have a limited slip (LSD) you'll need the fluid made for those. I believe that the owner's manual recommends 90wt for the non-LSD rear.

3 places get gear lube in the fc

1) 5spd tranny
2) 5spd tranny shifter assembly
3) Rear dif.

All three have drain bolts. The shifter assembly can be filled by just removing the shifter surround, shifter, and bushings.

Does anyone drain the shifter assembly, where is the plug? Does it ever need to be changed or get low?

Get under the car, you'll see the drain plug.

1) Mazda never fills the shifter extension housing from the factory.
2) The Mazda FSM does describe to fill the extension housing.
3) Filling the shifter housing creates a mess unless you have brand new shifter boost (3 of them!).

I usually don't bother, cause Mazda didn't do this from the factory floor.

If you put a piece of 3/8" tygon tubing on the end of a squeeze bottle (quart) of gear lube it makes filling the differential pretty easy. Squeeze in as much as you can, then add more (to squeeze bottle) as needed from another container.

If you get adventurous and start pulling bolts from under that shifter housing, keep an eye out for springs & ball bearings. She'll drain from there, but what you just pulled wasn't exactly a drain plug

Yeah, it seems it would make more sense to just pack that housing with some light grease, instead of stinky fluid that splashes around all over the place...
