Need electrical help: S4 ->S5 gauge cluster swap..
Im fairly certain that there was a diagram of what to do when putting a S5 N/A gauge cluster into a S4 N/A, but I searched for about 1/2 and hour and couldnt find much.. Anyway, Like I said I have a S4 N/A, and a S5 N/A gauge cluster that I want to put in. I already took my stock one out, along with the little wiring harness back to the connector. The connectors are not even close to the same size, the S4 one is about 1/2 inch longer than the S5 one. Ill get some pics up ASAP just to illustrate. Also, on the back of the S5 cluster there seems to be 3 circular connections, but only 2 connectors on the harness. I already set the milage on the S5 one to match mine, but need help on how to re-wire it to work correctly. Thanks alot..
wow, thats gonna be a project. Ive never seen a writeup for that, and far as I knew the S4 ECU wasnt compatible with the S5 gauge cluster, but I could be wrong. IF you have the S4 and S5 schematic, that project shouldnt be too much of a pain. I can help, if you cant read schematics.

Some people just love the impossible things :-D As the rat said, you're going to have to dig up the wiring diagrams for both series, and try to match the wires up, and well, good luck. You're also going to have to make sure the voltage/resistance/etc is the same so you don't go frying anything.

Yea I think it was Icemark or Hailers that had a short little schematic of how to do it, and as far as I remember it was just a few pins that needed to be swapped. Here are pics I just took of the 2 clusters

Now on this picture the S4 cluster is on the left. As you can see there are 2 sets of circular pins, with 2 circular connectors. On the right is the S5 cluster and harness. Now there are 3 sets of circular pins, but still only 2 circular connectors on the harness....

Please tell me what to search for....
I cant use less than 3 letters, so S4 and S5 are out. Ive searched for "gauge cluster swap" and found nothing. Ive searched for "cluster wiring" and found nothing. As Ive said, I KNOW that you have done the write-up before, but I searched for about 1/2 an hour and came up with nothing. And sorry I dont frequent team FC3s.org.... Believe me Id have much rather found my answer on a search and have been done with this early this morning when I had started, instead of having to post a thread and leave my car in the garage in pieces....

These are the only two that I see real quick... the picture is of what the layout of the S5 harness is, so you can just convert the S4 harness to match it.
This link should help:

Here is a couple of diagrams:

OK..thanks. Not sure If I can decipher that or not, but Ill give it a shot... Also, like in my pics above the S5 cluster has 3 circular pin rings on the back, but only 2 connectors.. What are the center pins for?

Just move the S4 pins to match the diagram of the S5 cluster (as the top picture shows).

Oic. The cluster itslef has the pins on the back, but the harness only has the 2. Thats weird. And as for swapping the pins, do I just pull the wires out of the one plug and put them back in to another hole? Or cut wires and re-connect them in different positions?
I unlock the metal clips that the wires are attached too, slip the wire and clip out, and move it to the correct position.
But I noticed in your picture that you had the S5 harness as well, so might just match up the harness where it plugs into the cars harness. You might not have to move much of anything then. Again you would just check the wire color to the wire position and match the S5 one to the S4 one at the car harness.

Ok, Ill try this out either tonight or tomorrow and let you know how it turns out. Also, will I be ok as far as voltages and stuff are concerned? Is everything the same from S4 to S5 ?

Ok, Im back with a few questions..
1st of all, which side does the white connection go on, and which side does the black one go on? (Sorry, Im retarded, I took the connector off and its been a few days since I looked at it and I forgot
) The black plug says BK, the white one is labeled NA. Thanks..

Now I didn't think you wanted me to tease you about that the black plug goes to the one marked black...
anyway, the next thing I want to try is to see if I can get a S4 tach to work in a S5 gauge cluster, so you can still have the proper redline and shift light operation.

Pictures time..
1st off, on the back of the S5 cluster, there are the two sets of pins on each side, and the one in the middle with no pins (For the auto Id assume as Icemark said). Anyway, on the set of pins on the right, there are 11 pins. On the set of the pins on the left there are 10 pins.

However, on the S4 harness, there are 8 connectors on the white plug, and 10 connectors on the black plug. (I Highlighted pins in yellow as pic was a bit blurry)

So are some pins useless?
Oh and Icemark, nothing is marked on the back of the cluster itself as far as black or white is concerned. And thanks again, I really appreciate the help.
