Need electrical help: S4 ->S5 gauge cluster swap..

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
yeah there are some wires on the S4 that are not on the S5. Things like the alt warning and cooling fan warning that the S5 never got.
The guide pins on the back of the cluster make it pretty fool proof to plug in the harnesses.

Sorry, but one more quick question. From the diagram, it looks like you have to swap the high beam switch and the oil level sensor from the black connector to the white connector, and the right turn signal, coolant warning, and coolant level sensor from the white connector to the black connector. Is this right?

OK, finally got around to putting it back in. All of the gauges seem to work , yay! I have one more question though. Are all of the gauges still accurate, such as tach and speedo? Like when it reads 7k, am I still at 7k, and the speedo still accurate to speed? (guess I shouldve asked this b4 I went ahead and swapped )

Nope, both clusters are from 5-speeds. I didnt think that the tach would be off since the cluster is recieving an elsectrical signal for that, but since the speedo was purely mechanical I was kind of worried, since the MPH increments were a bit different.

As for me, I was planning to use a freebie s5 cluster in my '88 GTU. Unfortunately, when I got it apart, I discovered that the fuel gauge didn't work. So, I decided all I really cared about was the 9krpm tachometer. The s5 tachometer is smaller, so it fit fine in the s4 case. The rev buzzer connector is in a different place, so that won't work without adding jumper wires. Doing this also gets rid of the shift light and the high-beam indicator. Since I'm using this car solely for autocross, I could care less about any of those things. Now, the final issue is making it look pretty. Since the s5 tach is smaller, it leaves a gap between the tach and the gauge surround bezel. I just got out my ol' compass and glued a piece of glossy black cardboard to the tach. It looks pretty good now. I doubt anyone would notice unless I told them.

here's another question, where is your favorite source for wiring schematics? i looked at the FSM online and it blew pretty hard in my opinion. my auto mechanics class had Mitchell's, and i loved them. i wish there was something like the Mitchell, but for each car. the book had all mazdas, plus Lexus. they're set up like encyclopedias, which is good if you need info on every car.. anyone know where there's free Mitchell resources online? i searched before but came up empty handed.

Wow, this is great stuff. Im about to do a swap myself and I only have one question.
I have an s4 TII manual cluster. The oil-p and boost gauge are shot. I bought a new gauge surround to fix an illumination problem and it came with an s5 auto cluster. Will I have any problems swapping the s5 unit in? I have an aftermarket turbo gauge so it would be great to use that and have all the nice gauges on the s5.
Thanks for the great stuff so far. This newb is learning a lot.

Good job by the way... most noobies are too incompetent to help themselves, and instead ask questions on every tiny issue.

Anyway, I'm going to swap the gauges and see what happens. As far as I can see, an auto s5 gauge should swap in without too many probs--just have to switch the wiring to the correct areas.
Thanks to Ice for his help. I hope this works...

In any event, the new gauge cluster is from an s5 NA automatic. Will there be a difference in speed indicated? And if so, is it possible to calibrate the speedometer?
Thanks again for all your help guys. Next project: attach boost guage to steering column...
