Was gonna post this in the Tech section...but there's no general area that seemed appropriate to post. I'll try my luck here first.

So far, it looks like I'm fucked...but there's just NO WAY I can permanently part ways with my baby. Let me give you the story:

1988 GTU. Owned it for 10 years. Currently unergoing a complete overhaul (paintjob, street port, Stage 3, wheels, coilovers, rollcage....the total works). I'm in Taiwan right now, and it looks like I'm staying here. The car is in California. I NEED to import the car here. There's a big, empty hole in my soul right now, and it can only be filled with my baby at my side. If I can't get her here as a street-legal car, I'll still bring it in as a track-only. But before that last-ditch option...

Taiwan now REQUIRES any imported car to have OBD II. If it don't have it, you're screwed. But now that the car is in the process of getting rebuilt, is there ANY way I can get an ECU or piggyback that spits out OBD II maps? Been searching like a mad man, but so far haven't found any specific info on if these aftermarket ECUs provide an OBD II port. And even if it does have that port, are there even retrofitted OBD II codes for the FC?

But even then -- if I somehow found an OBD II-compatible setup -- this bitch is gonna be Stage 3. I have no idea how it's gonna pass emissions. Can I SOMEHOW:

- Fudge my numbers (i.e. dumb them down via Hack)?
- Run lean / Alcohol?
- Pass emissions similar to CA rules with a Stage 3 setup?

Has anyone here had success passing their Stage 2/3/4 car in a strict state, and if so, how did you do it?

But the main question here is the OBD II retrofit.

First off you should check if OBD II retrofit is even allowed.

Yo there. Even if it ain't allowed, do you think I care about that? I just talked about FUDGING my data numbers even after I had one installed. No, breaking the law if I must is a requirement if I can't get her over here any other way.

Look up and compare the FD's ECU and harness to your FC's....

Make a list with 3 categories. Column 1 is the listing of the FC, 2 is the FD.

Look and see what's there and what's needed.

Column 3 is, of course, the Cost:Benefit ratio.

I assume the reason Taiwan law requires an OBD-II port is so your car can be hooked up for emissions testing there, so just putting a dummy/non-functional port in the car won't help.

What about trying to find an FC in Taiwan that is already grandfathered into pre-OBD-II compliance? It could be a rolling shell as long as it is legal. You could bring your car over in parts and reassemble the key components into the Taiwan body. You'll lose the nicely painted body you had in the States, but it's better than nothing.

 

I was thinking about just putting in a dummy plug and then playing dumb, hoping that they would have a backup exhaust sniffer. But I haven't found any info on their intimate procedures. My gut doubts it, though. Still looking into shipping the car over as 'track only', but again, havent found any info on that. Afterall, I'm coming back to the States in a few years (when the shitstorm is over!), so I wouldn't mind just giving her time on the track and late midnight runs on the Wangan. By the way, the canyon roads here are EPIC...which is one BIG reason why I want to have my baby over here.

While searching for keywords pertaining to 'Taiwan', I noticed people talking about how somebody who's a member here on RX7Club has a White FD running around Taipei. I WANT TO TALK TO THIS PERSON. Granted this thread was like 3 years old. I'll link up to the thread in a future post.

I agree with the other posters about you being SOL, I'd go with the rolling shell idea and transplant everything into it.
