Need advice disassembling turbo - searched

I'm new to turbo's, and I'm trying to port the wastegate on an s5 turbo. Problem is I can't get the hot side separated from the center section.

Things I've tried:
using the 2 captured bolts (under center oil ports) to push the two pieces apart.
liquid wrench on the seam of the two parts
fairly light tapping with a rubber mallet
light heating of the hot side with a propane torch and a then the rubber mallet

Any other advice or tricks for taking the turbo apart?

Thanks.

just take that back plate off and you can have access to the wastegate, you don't need to take the turbo right apart...BTW this pic is from the archives - cough cough

you can thank NZ convertible

Actually that's not mine, mine looks way better...

Personally I would never port the wastegate with the housing on the turbo. There's too much risk of shavings getting into places they shouldn't and doing damage later on.

The two bolts under the oil ports have always worked for me. It can take quite a bit of effort but it should work. Onve they're pushing against the housing can you get them to turn at all?

I torqued the bolts against the center section until I couldn't really turn the wrench any further - didn't want to trash the threads so I didn't try to put an extension on the wrench. It didn't budge.

I didn't want to go crazy with the hammer and break something.

I guess I'll give it another try tomorrow.

Keep cranking - those bolts don't usually break.
They are special high-strength, high heat resistance bolts.
If you're really scared about the housing not coming apart, shoot some penetrant in the seam.
Be warned that all that stuff soaks into the housing, and it'll smoke and stink when you first get it up and running again!

Folks, don't attempt to do this, cause you're going to most likely **** up the balance.
Swap the ENTIRE CHRA - they are all the same.

Sorry, question reguarding that turbo....

It looks a lot like the turbo I got off a first gen probe gt.

The turbo I got is an IHI RHB5 VJ-11 turbo. Are they similar? Just wondering. Thanks. Sorry for the hijack

The only pic posted so far is of a stock S4 turbo. That's pretty much what most turbos that age look like.

Hey yeah if you get that housing off and start porting dont go too crazy with that. I was told by numorous ppl that you can pretty much port all you want up untill that flapper door diameter and turns out that if you go to large (like i did) you can **** up that flapper door from sealing and have boost issues.
So dont go crazy with it.

So are you guys saying that the S4 center section and hot/cold side are the same as the S5? If i have a blown S5 turbo lying around and a perfect S4 can i take them apart and use the exhaust housing from the S5? this way i could use the manifold and turbine housing with the dual wastegate ports from the S5?

I've always had success removing the hot-side by using the bolts to put some tension onto it, then wacking it with a hammer several times. PB Blaster makes the process go a lot easier. If you are REALLY stuck then you can heat the hotside with a torch.

Thats why you remove the old flapper door and install a new one. Its pretty obvious in the picture shown in this tread that they have ported significantly past where the stock flapper is at. Don't any of you guys read the archives? NZ convertibles write-up covers all of this.

Thanks for the replies. I cranked down (er.. up?) on the two bolts further, and it came loose. Made a bunch of popping noises that had me a little worried. Usually when I resort to brute force I wind up breaking something - exhibit A would be one of the studs that bolts up the DP.

Used paint on the flapper door to figure out how much to port. Started grinding with a dremel, but I need to get a die grinder with a longer bit to finish it up.

If you're talking similar because they are both turbos, then yes.
If you're talking similar because you can swap parts, then it's NO.

That is correct.
The only thing different is the turbine housing and the oil drain pipe.
Otherwise, the compressor housing, the compressor wheel, the center housing, the turbine wheel (and shaft) are all identical.

I was getting ready to port my s4 turbo wastegate. Didn't have any trouble using the 2 bolt method to seperate them but I noticed a crack in the turbine housing where it bolts to the centre housing. Also noticed a crack inside across the thin vein next to where the turbine wheel turns. Is this housing trash? Sorry, no way to post picks at this time.
