name this part please

Hi yall!

ok, so on my s4 engine block I spotted this solenoid thingy. can anyone tell me the name and what its for? So far I put a block off plate but im a lil scetchy if it will affect the oiling system. I know it might control oil flow due to it being on top of the mid plate.

oh and before someone says I should have searched, I didnt because I dont even know what Im searching for. lol

please help

it's EGR, if your car don't pass smog or planning not passing smog then forgot about it and block it off

And EGR. But you shouldn't need it to pass emissions period - S5's don't even have the EGR valve, as it was unnecessary.

You also need to be sure you used a flat gasket with your blockoff plate to prevent any leakage from one hole in the intermediate housing to the other holes.

One passage is fed exhaust fumes from exhaust manifold thru a cast passage in the intermediate housing, to the EGR. Then the EGR passes the gasses to the other opening. The OTHER opening goes to the primary intake ports in the intermediate housing, and from them to the intake *stroke*. See diagrams in the FUEL AND EMISSIONS section of the FSM for your series four car.

Hold on a sec now...

My last truck failed emissions due to high oxides of nitrogen (NOx) and I got the following rundown from all my searching and talking with emissions people...

In addition to highly advanced timing, I should check for vacuum leaks and for the EGR functioning... High NOx is caused by either running lean, EGR valve failure, or some combination there of... High oxygen content causes the combustion chamber and exhaust gas temps to be SIGNIFICANTLY higher then normal and this causes NOx emissions.

There was no EGR on the truck. It came stock without one. I had a massive vacuum leak...

It seems to me that cooler combustion chamber temps would improve the longevity of our engines because they are already susceptible to heat problems. It should also reduce the chance of detonation... I'm basing that assumption on the localized boiling near the spark plugs/coolant jacket modification that people do. A cooler combustion chamber should reduce the prevalence of that hot spot.
