N/A Tranny Question, is it weak?
Alrighty, ive read that the N/A trannys are pretty much at the limit of HP that they can handle
Is this true, if i plan on putting my N/A Rx-7 to 180-200 hp (an additional 40-60hp) am i asking for trouble? am i going to be driving one day and is my transmision going to be dragging sligtly behind my mufflers connected only by a bent drive shaft and spedo sender?
or
am i worrying and should not ask such a silly question agin

I;ve ran a 13B peripheral port (roughly 300 flywheel hp) and a 150shot of nitrous on a n/a gtu transmition and it held up fine.
However, if you put slicks on your car, or grab traction when dumping the clutch.....you'll be picking up alot of peices.
In general, treat it nicely, and it'll hold up just fine.

Well i had an auto...........it was nice I guess, it was very slow off the the line, but after that it had plenty of go. They tend to self destruct around 30-40K miles though. When I swapped out mine for a 5speed conversion, we found that it was a replacement tranny in there already, and the car only had 77K on it, and was already on it's 2nd tranny! I say to hell with the week *** auto. Get a 5 and you'll be much better off. Also teh auto limits you to a 7K redline, but the 5 will give you teh 8K line!
GO 5 speed!

Did I mention that most slugs used to beat me off the line?! For real if you are going to push any extra power teh auto will bite the dust in a hurry, and also have you ever listened to an auto rex with a good exhaust system? I'll save you the pain, it sounds like ****. Because it decides to shift when you still want to wind it out more, and then it will step back and forth between gears if you are running in traffic and it just sounds nasty to hear the exhaust changing so much as it throws itself into overdrive and ****. Also autos are hard to drift in my opinion. And you can not roll start an auto, so if your starter goes out you are screwed or if your battery dies and nobody has jumpers you're screwed. Also autos weigh like 80 pounds more. But in their support, they make downshifting very smooth.

For what it's worth, my experience is that the syncro's are the weak point in NA tranny's. Been through 3 sets. But, I learned and can report that if you put a GL4 tranny oil instead of GL5, they hold up much longer.
As to auto tranny, does any one know for sure if a NA Auto tranny is any different than a Jspec T2 auto tranny in regards to clutch's, bands, etc.??

Doah, sorry, didnt specify, its a 5 speed, and its already kind-0 crunchy in 2nd and 5th but that might be something else, i got a leaky slave cilinder and so someeimtes i might not be gitting the full though

The synchros will live forever if you know how to shift, the problem is snapping input shafts and output shafts and stripping the teeth off the gears after you get traction and a strong clutch. Keep a stock-like clutch on it and street tires and it will handle the abuse OK.
I liken the clutch and tires to fuses... they are there to slip to prevent the tranny/driveshaft/rearend/axles from dying. Before you get bigger fuses you need to make sure the rest of the system can handle the power.
