Cheaper to just buy a used tranny.

You're probably not rev matching, to cause that syncro to go bad.

This is a very common problem with 2nd gens, specifically the NAs. For some reason, the TIIs are a little better (odd, because they use the same syncros as I recall). It might be hard to find a used transmission that doesn't have the same problem unless it is a low mileage unit. The annoying thing is that you won't know you got another bad one until it is installed.

Transmission rebuilds are not always as expensive as people think. I recently paid $600 Canadian to have mine rebuilt, an that included both a new input shaft and cluster shaft, as well as the syncros and seals all around.

Well, there is one tranny that I know that is in good shape.

its off an 89 Red GXL. I'm sure you can pick it up less than 200 bucks.

The car sat in my friend's garage for a good year or two cause he planned on rebuilding it. Now its gone.

In the mean time, synthetic oil often helps smooth out worn syncros.

aslo in the mean time dont ram it into gear, just use fingers to ease it into gear. When the rpms of the tranny and engine match it will slide right in.
