my oil smells like gas

i had my motor done at rx7world by ernst and he had my injectors cleans by rc engineering i guess. the motor had about 7000 miles on it and my oil smells like gas and is kinda thin. i just want to know if anyone has had this problem and what was done about it. i dont think my injectors are leaking though cause my motor cranks up great with no problem at all.

normal if the engine has been flooded or there is seal leakage.

Not normal for a good condition motor that has not been flooded.

And the oil should be changed anytime the engine was flooded.

^^^If there is significant gas in the oil what is that a symptom of? How long can i expect my motor to last if it does smell significantly?

of the motor being flooded or leaking injectors

impossible to say without a compression check and knowing your driving style and maintenance styles.

Ford recently had a huge problem with their new PowerStrokes. Something in the fuel system leaked ( injector o rings I believe) causing engine and turbo failure. Petrol ruins oils ability to do its job so be really careful on this.

Just because your oil smells like gas doesn't necessarily indicate the presence of significant amount of gas. Ya gotta to have a sample of the oil analysed in order to determine if there is a real problem. A small amount of gas in the oil is not unusual--especially in a rotary engine. Check out BlackstoneLabs.com for additional information.

man, I'd be broke if I changed my oil every time my car flooded... hell, I'd probably change my oil once a week.

not my S5... but my 10AE I'm sure has flooded at least 100 times since I've owned it.

Sounds to me, if you do indeed have large amount of gasoline in your oil, i'd assume that your oil control rings aren't sealing properly.

I had the same symptoms and had my oil analyzed by Oil Analyzers Inc (~$17) on numerous occasions. It ranged from 5-6% volume of gas in my oil, which is not good as gas is an abrasive and offers no lubrication. I troubleshot everything I could from replacing fuel injectors and all that, but each time it was still 5-6% vol (my 20W50 was reduced to 5W30 in just 1000 miles, based on their reports).

But its fixed now. Not sure what fixed it, but since my last work on the car I adjusted timing (it was way off-not sure why as I check it every year), changed the coolant sensor, and adjusted the fast idle cam to work per the manual (thanks to help from HAILERS). After these, the fuel content was reduced to less than 2%. I did a second analysis after 1500 miles to make sure there wasn't a mix-up, and it measured less than 1%. Now I only have a very faint smell of gas in the oil.

This can also happen if the thing that acts as a PCV (can't remeber wtf its called) valve is malfunctioning than after a few hundred miles this can occurr. On a previous gslse I had, I was having the same problem, I did have the oil analized, but I don't remeber the %. My dad suggested I just remove the valve and cap the vac hoses (he was formerly a mazda dealership mech from 76-83), and thats what I did, left the oil vent just open fresh oil 1k miles later, no smell. Kept the car for another 50K miles before parting it with a still running engine at 185k

A weird side effect of the part missing, once the tube got kinked as I was checking the timing, and within a few minutes it started smoking badly at idle. I thought for sure that meant the oil controll rings where bad, my dad swore it was normal, and had some other cause. He had a s5 gxl with 40k at the time, and he demonstrated by doing the same thing, and sure enough after about 5 min of idling it started to smoke.
