My GTUs broke

Hey everyone, this is one of my first posts...

So I bought my first rotary a while back from a member of this forum, its a 1990 black GTUs, the one with the wide fenders if any of you remember that car. So i've been driving it for a while and absolutly love it more than any car I've ever owned (and I had a 460hp 03 Mustang Cobra) it just keeps making me smile every time I drive it, so I decided to start doing some essential mods.

so I bought a short throw shifter.
after installing the cheap ebay short throw shifter I drove for like a week and on friday leaving from work I back up and and now she's stuck in reverse...but you can still put it in first OR second, but that just locks it in 2 gears (I mean STUCK in reverse)...so I kinda think the shift fork got stuck and then dislodged from the shift rail? Has anyone else had this problem?? I would like to think it wasn't the shifters fault but I also dont want to think of it as a coincidence...

So after work ( I am a mechanic for a ford dealer ) I pull my car in and pull the transmission out, I havent dissasembled the trans yet, will on monday. I just wanted to pull the trans and get the car out of the shop...as was my goal today (FYI pulling the trans is very simple on these cars, only like an hour and a half) I have no experience rebuilding manuals or diagnosing problems with them other than simple things, any input from anyone will be greatly appretiated. I do plan to rebuild it since I have it out, may get a new clutch too since i really don't like having to do things twice since its got 120k on it and I do plan to get more power.

But seriously I really didnt expect the first breakdown to be a transmission problem lol, since I did my research and saw how "unreliable" rotaries can be heh

you might have gotten a **** shifter from ebay, u can never tell till it comes in and you put it on your car. have u tried to put back your stock shifter to see what happens?

OK I just dealt with this problem. Apparently theres a quick fix which is listed here: http://www.miata.net/garage/stuckreverse.html
I guess the fix works for FCs too...

I just replaced the transmission. I didn't see the fix until after I was done with the trans swap.
