Damn man...where did you get that housing from in such good shape?! How much did it cost?

Hmm, I think I tallied it up the other day. I was including everything I've bought so far for it including mods and it totalled somewhere around $1600 so far, I don't know exactly. I don't like to think about that part too much

Oh and this was with getting the engine core for free, too. Of course the only thing going to be left originally from this motor are the front counterweight, rotors, irons, and a few other things under the front cover.

 

This is the kind of detail I love to do when I build things, one day I hope to build an engine with enough detail like yours, basically a PERFECT engine.

As long as this was resurrected I might as well update... I decided to go ahead and get some brand new side seals too! My side seals were useable, but close to being out of spec so I didn't want to risk it. And btw, clearancing side seals is the most annoying thing ever

 

Well there have been people that keep asking me what's going on with my engine, where's an update, what am I doing, etc, so I figured I'd update you all a bit.

This project has sort of... ballooned into a much larger ordeal. I've also been working on a lot of other people's rx7's besides my own unfortunately, so I haven't had time to finish some things. BUT, it doesn't matter anyways because I'm still waiting on some parts. In addition to this engine I decided it's time to go with Megasquirt n' Spark, parallel fuel mod with aeromotive FPR and ss fuel lines, 4x550cc and an FD fuel pump (might as well go with more than enough fuel and tune down since I have standalone, and my ports will be large), relocated battery, bla bla bla. My megasquirt still isn't completed, and once it gets here I have to build the harness, I'm still waiting on some stuff for my battery relocation, and I'm waiting on various misc things for my fuel setup. Therefore I haven't been too crazy about getting stuff done.

Anyways, today I worked on my primary intake port. Here's a pic of the UNFINISHED product. I ran out of sandpaper drums so I couldn't finish smoothing/straightening out the lines and smoothing the runner/bowl, so this is just the rough port before I can finish it off.



For comparison here is stock.



The secondary/aux is my secret for now. Once the engine is broken in, standalone is fully tuned, and things are tweaked the way I want, I'll be heading to the dyno to get some numbers. After the I get the numbers I'll fill in on the rest. Some people know what the secondary/aux ports look like already, but oh well

That's it for now, any questions? I'm just moving along slowly, hopefully I'll be building the engine this week and test fitting it/some custom stuff in the engine bay but who knows. I cannot get the n/a sleeves out of my housings for the life of me, but I'm paying a visit to a machine shop tomorrow to see what they can do.

 

looks like a great build man! its like a whole new engine. i'l be starting my rebuild soon and this is gonna help out a lot. did you watch any of the videos to get the info on how to do it? or just a chilton's guide?

 

I've watched the Atkins Video and Bruce Torrentine video, but honestly the most information I got was from researching. Also, to build the engine, just follow the FSM step by step, it's the best guide in the world

hey i have the exact same exhaust ports. but mine are polished.

POLISH THEM. YOU WANT THEM AS SMOOTH AS POSSEEBLE

 

No yours are slightly different, mine goes down a tad further, up a little (if I recall yours didn't go up at all right?) and out on the sides a little. Shape is similar though

And just because it's not polished doesn't mean it's not smooth. It's smooth as silk to the touch, just doesn't look it. I used sandpaper drums to smooth it all out, but with my die grinder it was quite difficult to get any type of good position or angle to do it, unfortunately. I was having to smooth it out at a big angle obtrusive angle

 

I think people take their polishing a bit too seriously...

 

Yep! How much does it really matter? REALLY? Someone explain it, because as long as it's smooth, what does polishing it to a mirror shine really provide? Smooth is smooth, polishing is a waste IMO. I merely try to get it completely even/smooth to the touch.

Now I need to buy a dial indicator stand to check endplay, after that I'll wrap it up and drop it into the car. Then all I have to do is build the harness for my Megasquirt, put my manifolds in, route my new custom intake, install my new fuel setup/ss lines/fittings, install the new fuel pump, install/relocate the new Optima Yellowtop 51R battery, set up the MS, and fire the beast up..... Some day this car will run again, some day...

Hey, just be happy you won't have to rebuild it 20 times like Dustin, that should make all the extra work you have to do that much easier, heh.

 

You want the exhaust ports a mirror shine b/c it greatly reduces the carbon
that can build up. Same as a piston engine, they polished the cylinder head and exhaust ports to a mirror so carbon has nothing to "grab" onto.

 

polishing fills in the small cracks that you are not able to feel, to make it superbly smooth

 

Slowly but surely making progress.






Installed it today, very simple, I'm getting fairly fast at these installs, took less than 45 minutes. Probably would've taken a lot less time but the engine hoist was being retarded and had the engine all ****-eyed no matter how much I adjusted the tilt on the chain, so I had to essentially left the back up while sliding it into place in the tranny. Oh well.

Over the next few days I'll be starting the fuel, manifold, and intake portions of the project and running some stuff. As soon as the MS gets here I'll be building the harness for it.

Still stuff to be done, but it's making progress at least.

 

looks damn good bastard I'm still waiting on more orings and crap. I think if I tally up all the costs it will probably be the most expensive rebuild in history, lol. Anyways nice job man!
