My Car Is Slow
I MADE NINE PASSES AT THE TRACK LAS5T NIGHT AND AL I COULD GET OUT OF MY CAR WAS AN 18 SEC FLAT TIME SLIP. THE CAR HOOKED GREAT WITH LITTLE TO NO WHEEL SPIN AT A 5K LAUNCH BUT WHEN I GOT TO THIRD GEAR CARS PASS ME LIKE I WAS SITTING STILL. MY CAR IS STOCK WITH 140K AND ONLY AN ELECTRIC FAN MOD. THE SPECS ON MY CAR SAYS I SHOULD AT LEAST BE IN THE 15SEC MARGIN. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATFUL.AND DOES ANY ONE HAS A N/A THAT HAS BEEN TURBO BECAUSE EVERY CAR I SEE HAS A TII ENGINE SWAPPED INTO IT WITH A UPGRADED TURBO.THANKS GUYS

first off stop typing in CAPS
second have you checked to see if your 5th and 6th ports are working? Are you cats possibly clogged? Do a search on turboing an NA it is possible but not worth the effort or money in my opinion. Check the archives. You can do a tII swap which is probably the most cost effective way. Check the FAQ at the top of the page as well as NA to turbo swaps are covered.

The RX-7 is not a drag race car.

I don't care what any thing is "designed" to do, I care about what it CAN do. So, when mags test the cars, should they only test the acceleration on muscle cars?
What were your 60-foot times? You were shifting at 7k right? What does your airfilter look like? Time for a new one?

Abell abara drags his sooo...........
Also TurboII's had a factory 15.5 quarter mile, I dont think that n/a's were very fast. You will have to do alot of mods to get your times down.

TII's were actually down around 15.0-15.2 on all the factory/magizine tests I have seen. N/A's were around 15.9-16.3 depending on model and verts were about 17 flat.
Check your fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter, spark wires, 5th+6th port actuation, cats for being clogged.

First things first, I would make sure the car is running right before you condemn it to be slow. An 18 second 1/4 is WAY off the pace for and FC regardless of turbo or not. After you know the car is running right (all fresh fluids, filters, etc.), how are your driving skills (no offense), how many times have you been to the track? How long have you had the car, etc.

Don't feel down man. Just start modding it by replacing the stock intake and replace the whole stock exhaust system. Yo should be in the 16's after u get these mods IMO. Oh yeah at least ur car run man mine doesnt even start.

First off there are 2 responses that you should definately NOT listen to here. ZoomZoom...we're gonna take you off in a backroom and beat you up for saying that .
As for Takumi...do some research (or just think common sense) on the FC before you start talking like that. If the car is modified just to get it into the 16's then you have some SERIOUS issues going on there. The stock FC with old *** '86 tire technology runs between 15.9 and 16.3. Just adding new rubber will make a very big difference, let alone doing any modifications on the car. There is either something very wrong with his car or his driving skill, both should be addressed before he gives up on the car. I would never say give up on the car period, but you should definately check everything out (including skill...and don't be optimistic it gets you nowhere when it comes to driving ). I'm not trying to sound like an *** or anything, but that's just the only way to put it. After some more practice if it stays the same check out the car itself. 3rd gear is pretty much the "stump puller" in any car (in general) so you definately shouldn't feel slow in 3rd gear.

1/8mph 59.68
1/4et 18.000

thats a 5k slip launch and shifting at 7k
today i changed the plugs they were ok but one thing confused me was that when i pulled the plugs the #9s plugs were at the top and the #7s were at the bottom.i thought the top plug was the leading and the bottom was the trailing, the plug wires were wired the same the leading wires were at the bottom and the trailing was at the top. so i swapped it around to see if there was a difference and it seemed to have a little better throttle response and it seems to have a little more power in third gear.
can anyone let me know if this is right.

Do you know if what 5/6 port actuators are working (most likely not) right now? Does the motor have good compression (hopefully it's not too low, but don't panick...it's most likely something else). You should go and look at the car while it's revving and see if those are working at all, see if you can rotate the lever by hand and how hard it is to do so. That's the most likely thing that's really killing you. They make up for a very large portion of power in the motor.

I take it you still have cats since you said stock. As a test at least, I'd gut the cats and wire the sux. ports open and try again. I bet you get at least in the 16s. 2.4 60' time can definitely be improved though.

i looked for operation of 5&6 ports i rev the heck out of the engine and they dont move at all but the one i can get to i can operate it by hand(it moves freely)and for the other one(which is at the front of the engine) i can push on it with a screwdriver and it moves also but just a little sticky and that could be the angle i,m pushing it at.

KiyoKix. I'm just pointing that out since i had a 88 gxl and it ran in the 17's stock and when i install HKS intake, Bonez race pipe and N1 cat-back i was in the 16's. And i did say IMO so it might not be true so im sorry for saying that.

under load means you actually have to drive the car if you didnt know. Also look in the archives for the thread about cleaning the 5th and 6th ports... might be worth it.

If you see the port opening, they are not stuck (although it doesn't mean that they are opening). This wau you will know if they are or aren't stuck!
Good Luck
BTW - The stock cat might be clogged and killing you engine at the same time

You should practice your launching, it's common for RX-7's to run 2.0-2.2 60-ft's.
how does your car's powerband feel? does it cut out dramaticly at high RPM's? Or miss/surge at all?
