Unhappy My 87 turbo II is dead.. i think

Hi all.
Ok well basically my car wont start, at all, it has a new battery, and new ngk plugs so its not that.

But anyways, I turn the key to accessory the windows stereo etc all work fine, the on position does nothing, but when i turn it to start the car dies, the electricity just shuts off. Then i have to disconenct the battery wires wait like 10 min reconnect them again just to get power back to the car.

It hasnt always done this however, before it would turn over but not catch on , sometimes it would catch for a second but not all the way and id see puffs of smoke out my exhaust.

It all started when i was just driving down the road, jsut shifted into third gear, and click everything went out, it was as if something flicked a giant off switch for my car, it died totally, and i rolled to the side of the road. No smoke or anything, and when I tried to turn it over it sounded as if it was spinning faster with a higher pitched sound than before, and it was not catching on, its also always had starting problems where id have to crank it for a a while or even hold the gas down to get it to start. I love the car but im moving soon so i need to get it running so i can move it, because if I cant make it work myself its getting scrapped i guess, damn i love that car , but there is no rotary mechanics here and i couldnt pay one if there was, somebody please help !!

Don't scrap the car, it sounds like an electrical problem, wait till someone can give you a more defined place to look. Anyone want to think it could be either the alt, ecu, or grounding?

I would think so. But have you attempted to push start the car? And you could not have a problem if its electrical. I know from experience that elec. problems seem to come and go as they please sometime. Your car could be flooded right now from sitting. You mean to tell me there aren't any rotary places near at all?? Have you posted in the Canadian forum to ask someone. I am sure there is someone near by to you that wouldn't mind looking at it.

Try having someone spray some starter fluid in the intake while you try to start the car. Might be able to at least get it going like this.

Sounds like just a toasted starter to me. I had an s-10 truck do what you describe once..the starter solenoid lodged on and started driving the starter with me driving downthe road...it was a massive power drain and it wound up killing the battery within seconds.

Other than that, you might have a bad connection. Id have your starter tested(and battery as well, if it was the one that was on there when this happened). IF the starter were bad it would cause what you have described. IT is not that hard to troubleshoot the engine electrical system of thes cars so just relax.

IF you want to check your starter yourself(rather than take it to autozon) do the following:

remove it from the car
get a good, strong battery and jumper cables
hook the ground of the body to the starter body
hook the + of the battery to the large bolt on teh starter(the one where you took the wire off of)
get a small piece of wire and wrap it around said positive terminal
touch this wire to the little bitty terminal(starter trigger).

The gear should both spin fast, and pop out to the end of its slot. IT sounds like it isnt popping out of its slot, which is why it isnt turning the engine over.

IF this tests ok, then you ahve a voltage problem at the starter. Get a voltmeter and check your battery as well as the voltage at the battery terminals and the voltage at the starter terminals, you have apoor gorund or power supply one.

Good luck, and ICQ me if you need further help.

I've got a similar problem.. used to crank and puff smoke, but now it won't do anything at all, as soon as I turn the ignition to the "Start" position all the power goes *bloop*

That could be your battery.

Well today i got it to crank over again, i took out the fuel pump fuse and tried to start it and nothing happend, i put it back in , it cranks but it doesnt catch on, if i hold the gas in the car will shudder as it ignites the gas and almost starts, but it doesnt, smoke comes out my exhaust because it does ignite some gas, just not enough im guessing, i have no clue whats wrong with it. As far as fixing i can, i lost my job EI doesnt exactly pay a ton a month, so fixing it is out, but anyways thanks for the help, i think im done with it, i cant handle the stress, i love the car to death, but i just cant fix it

Sadly yours, Brian
