Question Muffler as a pre-silencer question

Alright, so I'm thinking of putting in a muffler as a pre-silencer instead of just having a test pipe, because it's extremely loud. I don't mind it, but my parents are getting pissed off and want me to do something about it. My question is, what mufflers have people used for something like this? I know the cat/test pipe overall length (flange to flange) is 17.5" but I am having a hard time finding a muffler that size that will work. Anyone have any experience with this? Or does anyone know of a muffler that would fit after flanges are welded on? Thanks for any help.

I got racing beats down pipe and presilencer, stock Y-pipe and mufflers. Its pretty quiet. I don't know if a muffler will have the same resonating properties as a presilencer or a cat. I'm guess you don't have much money if you are trying to rig something up like this.

I already have the racing beat header, no pre-silencer though, because I have a custom catback... Between the header and catback is space for a stock cat, test pipe, or something of stock length, whatever. Money isnt too big of an issue, it is to a point of course, its just that my parents want my system quieter and I've read about people using mufflers as pre-silencers but I couldn't find any specific mufflers that were used.

FD guys use Borla XR-1 mufflers for midpipe type silencers sometimes. I've thought about doing it too.

you have the racing beat header w/collector? You should be able to fit the presilencer between that and the Y-pipe.

No... The racing beat pre-silencer is 20" long, the stock cat is 17.5" long, when you have a racing beat header or downpipe with the presilencer, it WILL bolt up to a "stock" catback. My catback is NOT stock because it was custom made to mate up to a racing beat header with a bonez high-flow cat (stock cat sized)... since then, however, I have removed all my emissions and have no cat, just a test pipe, therefore whatever I put in as a "pre-silencer" or another muffler will have to be the same size as the stock cat, which the racing beat pre-silencer is not (I emailed them and asked).

On my 2nd Gen. I used a 3" Thermal muffler, 12" long in the middle...nice and quiet.

We think alike. I bought one a muffler that I have to have flanges welded onto. I had a hard time finding one that would work. Edelbrock makes a 17" long muffler with 2.5" center inlet and outlet. I believe the typical flanges are 1/4" each bringing the total length to 17.5".

Oh cool!! I found the edelbrock you were talking about, 17" long 2.5 in/out diameter, and yes flanges are 1/4" thick so that would bring it to 17.5", thanks a bunch.
