Is this much carbon buildup on TB normal?

I finally took the TB off of the rest of the intake today and noticed black carbon buildup on the TB plates on the engine side. The dynamic chamber is also coated in a thin layer of carbon buildup. Is this normal?

Heres some pics. There originally was a little more on the TB, but some came off because of the pb blaster I used to try to loosten the screws on the double throttle plates, or whatever they're called (it didn't work.)

Ewww... That much buildup looks like it would cause problems, IMO (ie, stuck throttle plate, high idle because of poor tolerances, or hurting the air flow).

Get some carb cleaner and go to town on it.

Could it be caused by my street port? I think theres a bit of overlap.

I think it's normal, especially if it's high mileage, emissions not intact, and / or motor is ported?

Well, its not that high milage. It was just rebuilt 25k ago and I assume it was cleaned then. The motor is ported, though. It has a pretty good sized street port. There was a thread a while back with pics of the ports, I'll look for it. Emmisions are mostly gone. It has a straight pipe and no air pump ACV, but the EGR was still there.
I just looked at the injector air bleeds and they were heavliy carboned, which could explain some of the problems it had.
Is there some other reason this could happen? It ran great for a few years after the rebuild, then it all of the sudden started running badly. It had sat for about a month while I was in Germany and it never ran right once I was back. There was major carbon buildup in the engine as well so it might be linked.

not that much, a little is okay, but I'd imagine that would screw some things up, hahahaha. if thats whats coating your intake then imagine whats being sucked into your engine. Is your timing off?

The car isn't running right now and hasn't been running for almost a year. I was going to do the TB mod last night and noticed how much carbon there was built up. I guess it might be possible that the timing somehow changed after I came back from Germany. Within a few days it started flooding badly everytime I drove and just generally ran shitty.

It's totally normal. It's the result of intake reversion and the purge system. Clean it up and don't sweat it.

Ok, thanks for the definitive answer. I guess I'm just gonna give up on figuring out what caused all the carbon buildup inside the engine.
