MPG Question

I have a 87' TII w/ 2" exhaust w/ high flow cat, HKS intake, FCD and I get about 18-19 MPG. This car is my daily driver and I do about half city and half highway driving. When I just drive to and from work I normally never even get in boost much. Does anyone think I should be get more or less MPG? I've read where possible replacing the O2 sensor can help. Is this something I should look into? My car has 86,000 miles.

Yes replace the O2 sensor, plugs, and plug wires. That should help out a good amount. If you want, get an S-AFC and tune it so you aren't running overly rich.

NO! It is highly doubtfull that an S-AFC should be used to lean this car out. The owner already has a dangerous combination of the exhaust, intake and FCD. If anything, an upgraded fuel pump should be installed and THEN and S-AFC used to SAFELY adjust the fuel level with some way (wideband, EGT) of monitoring the ratio while this is taking place.

18-19 MPG sounds about right. A full tuneup will of course increase mileage.

Yeah you're right Aaron. I did mean that he should have it tuned via wideband though. He could still be running very rich down low...but of course you don't want to lean out the top end on a setup like that.

There's no reason for the car to run rich down low if it is running properly. If it is not running properly, aftermarket parts should not be used as band-aid solutions.

'89TII I purchased new, always 20MPG. Installed upgrades early 2003, now 19 MPG. Easy driving 90% of the time.
As stated above, better upgrade the fuel system.

18-19mpg isn't bad though for mixed driving.

the o2 sensor leans it out under 3800 for you.

18-19mpg is pretty good for a t2

yah, that is good for a t2. I used to have a t2 only ran in 15 mpg range.

now, my GXL has about 20-22 mpg after re-adjusted the throttle cable, tps, pretty much full tune up.

Ok, let's not turn this into another "I get xx MPG in my car" thread. There are already thousands of those around.

Never saw a difference after replacing one. I replaced the original @ 150,000 just before I had a new engine installed. Actually, i never saw a difference in any car I've owned after I replaced the O2 sensor. Maybe I replaced them too soon. Guess I should wait for them to fail.

What O2 sensor do people recommend for an 87 TII? Has anyone have experience with the O2 sensor from RX-7.com?

About 1 to 2 mpg increase on the new sensor, vs the old 170,000 mile one...95% of my driving is highway, though, where a good O2 really shines....

Sorry Aaron, it's another "I get XX mpg in my car" thread
