Moving air temp sensor to intake elbow
Would there be any advantage to moving the air temp sensor of a s5 n/a to the intake elbow like on a cosmo engine or most aftermarket ecus? Obviously it will read cooler, which would richen thing up (bad) but is there any up side?

By moving the temp sensor from the manifold you not only get it farther away from hot air but you avoid heatsoak. The sensor absorbs all the heat from the manifold and causes it to think it's much hotter that it is. I'm sure mazda knew this when designing it but I'll never understand why they were ok with it. Like you said in your question most aftermarket ECU's relocate the sensor. Another option is to buy an electronic thermostat from radio shack and place it's sensor outside the car to simulate real world temps.
None of this has any impact on your stock car. This is only valuable with an aftermarket ECU. The Aftermarket will benifit from knowing the real outside air temp to adjust it's mixture accordingly (especially at idle).
Before switching the sensor it was very confusing as to why my megasquirt thought the outside air was 186 degress outside. It's all heatsoak.
