Motor Eating Oil Like Crazy?

Hey guys, I just bought my RX7 a couple days ago and have only driven it around a couple times, not more than 50 miles. Just today while driving, my oil warning buzzer went off so I pulled off as soon as a could to an auto parts store to get oil. I filled it with 10w-30 Castrol GTX until it was on the higher end of the dipstick, then drove about 15 miles to home. On the drive back my oil buzzer went off again, so I filled it with what I had left in the 5 quart bottle. Is this something I should be worried about? Should I be using 20w-50 instead? Is it due for an oil change? There were no noticeable leak spots when I inspected around.

Car is a 13B NA, no performance mods other than aftermarket air filter. Previous owner had supposedly kept up with maintenance diligently. If anyone has some advice that's be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Probably apparent, but have to ask. Have you checked for a leak? Look under the car with it running. Check the oil cooler lines, as they're known to fail.

Did you verify it was low with the dipstick before refilling a second time?

If so, I'd have to agree with Cardinell - to lose oil that fast there'd have to be a big oil leak somewhere. Oil cooler lines would be my first guess - wait for the car to get warm (and oil cooler thermostat to open) and then look underneath so oil is flowing through the cooler as well. The lines run from the front cover of the engine (near the PS/AC bracket), up to the cooler (in front of the radiator), and then back to the driver's side bottom rear of the engine block. Otherwise, make sure your oil drain plug is on tight (dumb, but check it if you haven't), and look around the oil pan and trans to make sure it's not leaking from the oil pan gasket or rear main seal.

You haven't noticed a giant puddle under your car or excessive smoke?

If you are not noticing clouds of smoke when you drive then I would also suspect a leak. Check for a leak before proceeding. I personally have always used Castrol GTX 20W50 in all of my 7's and its been great to me. Other people use different oil and it seems to work well and they like it. Its up to you to decide which oil you prefer.
