Question Oil Change: I only drive my FD 300 miles a month and Castrol GTX

I only drive my FD roughly 300-350 miles a month. Is it worth it (money and time wise) to change it every 3 months or should I wait for the usual 2K-2.5K files?

Also, what does everyone think of Castrol GTX 20/50 ???? Is that what you use?

Hmmmmm 300 miles a month ....

Driving the car short distances is rougher on the motor than high highway miles and oil should be changed more often. Some follow the 3k / 3month rule of thumb (I know alot of you change the oil sooner than 3k) Your choice of oil is good in a hot climate (Texas,Florida) or summer time any where, alot use Valvoline 20w50 so it's a personal choice. I drive city miles so I change my oil sooner than 3k and these motors make the oil dirty pretty quickly not to mention the heat they build (this breaks down the addatives in the oil) so the longer you run it the less protection you have. Bottom line change your oil every 1.5k or 3 months which ever comes first.

I change my oil every 3k mi, regardless of the month. I only drive 5k mi every year so I change my oil about twice a year. I don't know where the 3 mo. rule comes into place. I doubt if the oil gets bad after 3 mo. A good way to tell when to change oil is by looking at the dipstick. If the oil is turning brown (not golden), it's about time.

I think people change oil more often than it's needed. Remember to use good filter. I use PureOne. At $6, it's the best filter there is.

Since you don't drive everyday, I would suggest a lighter weight oil like Castrol 10-40. This way, when you start the engine and all the oil is down at the pan, the oil will start lubricating faster. If you live in real hot weather (90-110 F), then you may need 20-50. Otherwise, the 10-40 works wonders in cutting down on engine wear at startup, which is 50% of engine's wear.
