Check the clamping at the firewall left nipple before removing the dash to change the heater core. Make sure the nipple is completely round and not squished at all.

The smell will generally only arise when the coolant can form vapour... So, the hotter the day, the more it will smell.
It would be advisable to do your best to clean it out.

i put a new clamp on the hose when i noticed it was leaking, and if the hose was lose i dont think i would have coolant all over the inside of my car.

If the nipple isn't completely round, the coolant will seep by, into the interior of the car, and run down the firewall to the apssenger side compartment.
A similar experience will happen if the clamp isn't completely tight... the bead on the nipple will keep the hose from shooting off.

I speak from experience in this and only mention it because I find it odd for the problem to occur only after you have done work.
