any stand alone ecu should be tuned by a shop on a dyno for the best results and unless you have extensive mods then you probably only need an R-tek and then only if it is a turbo

Its not chrome its crome...and no Motec is nothing like that.

Motec is a full standalone ECU like others have said before me, which you would have to do rewire and build a harness yourself for the engine and sensors, then produce a base map to start the car, then do extensive tuning with a dyno+ wideband02 and know how to read dataloggs.

While CROME is a stock honda OBD1 cpu reflash program that just adds ROMS to your exsisting CPU, via javascript based program manager. Requires no rewiring, no wideband o2 tuning or base mapping.

Whatever you know about hondas you need to throw out the window, i see in your other thread you wanted to cut springs too like a honda.

Do NOT try to go at rx7's with the same mentality as you do with hondas you will end up in a ditch somewhere stranded sucking dick for APEX seals.

We will help you, but first educate yourself there is FAQs everywhere in this forum and the search button is your friend, all your questions and future questions have already been answered just gotta find them.

They are excellent. They are also expensive. The cheapest Motec ECU for an RX-7 is about $2,000 with the wiring harness, no sensors or options. You would also need a laptop computer to tune it, or at least a desktop computer that can reach the car while it is on a chassis dyno.

The closest RX-7 equivalent to Crome is the Rtek Stage 2:

The average SAE certified mechanic with at least 200 hours of engine tuning experience could probably tune one just fine if he has a little bit of help with the initial settings. The average wanna-be drift "mechanic" who has done nothing but bolt on fancy Japanese anodized parts is going to fail for sure.

Also, since you are an ex-Honda person, I guess I should explain that in the world of real sports cars the term "tuning" means manipulating the fuel delivery and ignition on an engine in order to make it run better. For example, unbolting your stock hood and bolting on a carbon fiber hood is not "tuning".

You can learn how to tune it yourself. Tread with caution, however. These motors are very unforgiving if you make any mistakes.

If you're looking for something that's good for street tuning, MegaSquirt is definitely something to look at. It's a fraction of the price of a Motec and has a fairly large userbase which means that a base-map for a motor similar to yours is probably available already.

Just making sure. We have had several former Honda guys on this forum who didn't realize that "tuning" means something different outside of the ricer world.

Er, ASE, not SAE. Sorry about the typo. It was probably subconscious because I have been looking for my SAE membership card all day and I still can't find it. All I remember is that I put it someplace safe so I wouldn't lose it, lol.

MegaSquirt is a do-it-yourself kit. It is really geared more for somebody who wants to tinker around, although it is often mistaken as a low budget EMS. You can buy completed kits from some online dealers.

If you just want to tune the engine a little better without spending a lot of time and money, I would recommend Rtek or S-AFC. See our EMS forums for more information.

Why not build a badass non-turbo engine?

If you want a standalone and you want to learn, go buy an E6K. Dont dive into a Motec just yet, there is functionality there that you probably wouldnt understand or use.
