MOP mod

Yesterday while at my mechanic's shop I saw an interesting part for the S5 MOP.

*sorry, no pics...wasn't expecting anything like this but I'll get some when I go back...*

Basically, it was a block of aluminum about 1" thick that goes between the MOP and the front cover. There was a keyed shaft for the position sensor but the oil feed hole was blocked off, replaced with a nipple on the block's side.

This setup was designed to keep the functionality of the MOP system but allow for a separate supply of oil other than the oil pan...so basically you can run premix through the stock oil injectors rather than engine oil.

It was an intriguing and well made part (the owner was going to use a rather large remote master cylinder as the feed tank) and I wondered if anyone had seen a similar setup and what they thought of it.

Own it, like it, can't wait to use it. That shaft though isn't for a position sensor, the OMP or MOP regardless which you wanna call it the P stands for "pump". It uses the rotation of the E-Shaft to actuate the pump. The position sensor for the S6 is on the bottom of the OMP itself.

I've looked at this myself and thought about putting one in. I haven't found a really suitable oil tank though.

better to just add premix to the tank.

I was thinking about using an oil catch can, flipped upside down.

1) some are nice looking
2) you have that clear tube on the side, so you can see the level at a glance
3) some of them have the drain plug on the bottom , that would turn "into" fill plug
4) fairly cheap

I kno most of them have 2 nipples, i guess you could "Y" into one and feed the adapter.

Oil catch can is such a generic term. The catch can that I'm using has a filter on the top and that would be rather wierd for filling. Some people refer to recovery tanks as catch cans. Totally different. Not to mention it needs to be vented.

Also I would consider some sort of low warning device that you could wire in with the sump oil to set off the low oil light in the idiot cluster, or on the AIM dash in my case.

The MC rez that will be used has the typical float level sensor and the plan is to wire it to a dash mounted LED.

What's an MC rez?

oh - Master Cylinder Resivior. I would say NO to that. Think about how much oil that thing uses, than think about the oil getting sloshed around while driving, the little 1/8" line feeding it, I think you'll starve the OMP at one point.

Pointers from a paranoid builder - My tank holds a quart. I also have ~10" of -6 line feeding it strain down, I also have baffles in my tank. There will be enough oil in my line to burn through a gallon of gas

Motor Cycle reservoir. All Harleys and some Euro bikes have a reservoir for the oil instead of an oil pan setup. The oil pump pulls from the can, pushes it through the motor and a filter. Then back into the can.

Do something like the brake master how that low level works.. How it has that sensor at the bottom and I think its a magnet in the float.. And when it gets close enough the warning light comes on.

Something like that would work. Or how our add coolant light works.. The "fluid" acts like a ground and when its not grounded low coolant the light comes on. It can be fabbed up with lil work..
