Ok so i did a search on setting everyone had for thier SAFC's and the one guy said to becarful with the different series cars because the s4's lean out and the s5's richen up. Can anyone verify this for me. I have a 87 base and my car is leaned out 14% at the most and with my mods being a bonez race pipe, cs catback and drop in KN filter and wired open ports, should i not lean it out this much becuase these mods will already make it lean or what?

 

Why are you leaning it so much? Without anything to monitor your settings, you are getting yourself into trouble. 14% where? If it's in the middle or upper end , that's too much if you have stock injectors.
S4 and S5 react differently to exact settings if compared side by side with same mods. Then again any car would. No car is exactly the same even with same mods.
What you *can* do is tap into your O2 sensor at the ECU and monitor it that way. Use a digital meter and set it about .87-.89 .

 

ok well i reduced how much i leaned it out to a max of 10% and drove it to work. my car ran great and i can defiently feel a little extra power. My only problem is that it goes to 100% throttle, when i only have the gas pedal about 1/3 the way down. is this normal? do i need to adjust something? I know i should be getting this tuned on a dyno but i still have yet to hear of any in the buffalo area.

 

I don't have an S-AFC but the 100% thing might be the problem of the single plunger TPS.

Is this an NA? Because you said you had wired open ports. I haven't heard of NA's detonating much but I am sure it can happen.

You should have similar A/F ratios. I have RX7.com DP, cat, & cat back, & intake, MSD ignition, blah blah.
BTW that would be 140rwhp if it wasn't 95F outside!

 

Thanks alot man for the graph. I'm gonna have to play around a little bit but i think 14% lean would be the most i would go just because i don't want the engine to detonate. I've read some people have gone up to like 27% lean, i think that's just nuts, but hey if the car can handle it i guess it's ok. I really wish i had a dyno in my area so i could tune this perfetly and see how much power i'm really laying down.

 

Well, I don't think you should change anything without a wide-band oxygen sensor. Too risky. Besides, what tool are you basing your adjustments on? Seat of the pants dyno?
0% across the board until you can get some tuning time. A shop here in town used to do it for about $100 bucks, and I've seen 10+ hp gains from 3krpm and up from a properly tuned NA w/ and AFC, not just peak power.

 

put it back to 0 and find someone who knows what they are doing.... you don't need a dyno. just somebody with a wide band 02 system. any *good* speed shop should have have.

 

Yea but Buffalo sucks and we have no speed shops in the area. That's y we are known as the BLO cause we suck *** and have nothing cool in the area. I tried putting a post in the NE Section to find a dyno/tuning shope in the area or anyplace even semi close and noone seems to know anyone.

Ok a few more questions any help would be great. First since i'm running no emissions, before when i would redline my car and switch gears i would hear a little pop from my exhaust, some people say that i prolly had flames because that's what happens with no emissions and running rich, now since i'm leaning out my car should that go away, and if i run 89octane or 91 octane gas insted of 87 would that help prevent my car from detinating. Also would running a high octane gas change how much i would lean it out at all? Thanks for the help so far guys

 

Run 87 octane. NA's dont need anymore. Infact youll probably make more power off 87. Octane is a rating of the gasolines burn rate more or less. Higher octanes burn slower. With all cars, you want to use the lowest octane possible with out detonating. Just leave your safc alone and use 87 until you can get a wideband. Then after tuning if you are detonating step upto 89.
