Modifying S4 sport rear spoiler

picked up a sport rear spoiler at junk yard.. decent shape, not the best.. looks like someone took a belt sander to it because teh surface is all roughed/etched/burred up.

So i have a few ideas on it.. I will need to refinish it somehow. Im thinking laying some fiberglass over it.. Possibly extending the spoiler by an inch or 2, making it more aggressive..

My idea is to place styrofoam at the end of the spoiler in place, then lay a few sheets of fiberglass/resin over that whole setup.

My idea though is thing will eventually weight a ton.. so im thinking about maybe trimming/removing some of the material from the spoiler and replacing with styrofoam since the whole thing will be covered with fiberglass.

Has anyone else modified a S4 spoiler?

I got 3 ideas for this spoiler.. One is to mount it like factory, but having it modified/extended, another is to have it mounted in a fashion that it stands on the rear deck area (think datsun 240z BRE rear spoiler) , and another idea was to have it raised on stands .

Im not asking for anyones opinion on if it looks good, just want to see if anyone else modified one of these and any tips on refinishing the surface. thanks

I don't think anyone has modified one before, and if they have, I've never seen pics.
The Spoilers are hard rubber, and the reason it seems like someone took a sander to it is porbably because the sun ate away at the rubber just like it does on window seals and similar things.

Personally I think you'd be better off using some expanding foam in a template rather than styrofoam. Then take the template off, glue it to the spoiler using something like Lord Fusor, then coat the whole foam piece and spoiler tip in Fusor, sand it down, then give it a gel coat or something.

I'm no body guy, but that sounds like a better way to me.

Just curious, how much did you pay for it? I just purchased one off ebay for $67, and the guy says it's one of the best ones he's seen...

you can get them cheap, I got a flawless one for $70 from a fellow club member. Alot of guys actually get rid of them to either go for the clean look or get a different crappy wing. I think the sport spoilers are the best spoiler for the FC and I don't see how you could make it much cooler.

I'd like to see your progress though, good luck with it and keep us posted man.

I would love to see this done using stock mounting point with a slight upwards angle. Maybe <20*?

Get to work.

They cost 15 bux at the junkyard.

I'd love to find a sport in the junkyard...I also completely agree that they're the nicest spoiler for an FC:

If I got one I'd just want to re-paint/restore it though.

i havent touched this yet, i made a plywood template but im gonna try something different.. going to try this same method this guy did to make his front lip http://www.fiberglassforums.com/show...3809#post63809

Id like my wing to look something in the lines of a D-max rear spoiler.. but have it a little more tilted up.

IMO, if you're worried about weight, just make the first one. You can build it up out of pure filler if you like (sometimes its easier simply because its os easy to shape) and once you're happy with the overall look and shape make a simple cast of the outside.

Lay up a part in the cast and then it can be bonded to a regular sport spoiler and the whole thing primed/painted, or simply finished by sealing the bottom with another piece of FG for a full spoiler. The latter would require a little more fitment but meh.

I really like the first layout though, factory angle, but extended slightly, perhaps to just infront of the edge of the rear bumper, meaning the bumper sticks back slightly further.

If i dont like it, as long as i do a clean job making it and finish the product, i could always sell it to someone else who might like it.

since my test placements are just that.. i dont have the spoiler mounting holes drilled into the body.. so the spoiler sticks out about an inch when i held it up with tape..

Im not sure if that 2 inch extension will be as aggressive as id like, since it would be shorter then my tests when officially drilled and mounted.. Im thinking i might like to add a little more to it.

by the way, i cant stand how these spoilers look stock.. too plain for my taste, obiously my car is a bit aggressive so i want to match.

I have seen someone refurb one of these using fiberglass... The only thing that you have to worry about is flexing=cracking...
