Modify the FC Leading Coil..can I do this?

I would like to take the coil part Off and replace it with some MSD Blasters..One for each Rotor.I would like to just make a small "holder" for the coils and attach the ignitor to it..Keeping all the Wiring the same TO the ignitor, just Parellel the Wiring to the New coils...I am doing this,Instead of Running an MSD BOX.I can do this can't I?..without the MSD 6a or 6AL? Thanks Guys, any Opinions?

stock are pretty much bulletproof and over the years have proven to be better then almost any 'upgrade' look elsewhere for more important tweaks

Depends on the coil impedence...
There's a chance you could burn the ignitor up if the impedence between the parallel'd coils is too low.

I'd say this is a waste of time.
The stock coils are beefy enough, that even aftermarket coils are not that much better.

You'd get better gains going with a CDI box and keeping the stock coil itself.

The better cheaper thing to do is get two leading coil ignitors and two trail coils (just the coil not the whole coil pack) The trail coil will attach to the lead igniter like they where meant to be together. You can then remove the resistor from the lead coil (no resistor in the trailing coil pack) and run both coil packs off the leading signal. So they still fire in waste spark, and run at the same duty cycle but you get the advantage of having a discrete channel for each rotor with only one spark gap to traverse instead of two.

On my haltech equipped 13b-rew FC I did this but also had the advantage of running true direct fire which halves the duty cycle over wasted spark though initially I did run it in wasted spark because I was too lazy to run new wires. Running 9S in the lead position I noticed a significant improvement even when running waste spark.

There was less rich misfire under boost and the staging got better. The whole project cost all of 20 dollars in junkyard parts.

In a stock car you could actually run two stock trail coil packs, by running the toggle signal to both coil packs in parallel. This would give you true direct fire but would have no advantage without being able to change the coil charge time.

I wouldn't recommend MSD coils. I've had a bunch fail on various cars, creating problems that were very difficult to track down.

Also there's no need for any ignition upgrades unless you are actually experiencing ignition problems (ie. lots of boost or nitrous blowing out the spark).

The stock packs are massive and do their job very well. Don't go fixing things that aren't broke.

On the nitrous issue: decrease the plug gap and stock coils will let up any nitrous shot I've thrown at an engine.
Obviously not using stock plugs for those wondering about gapping.

If nobody went around fixing things that "aren't broke" then Everyone would Remain Stock, and we wouldn't Need an RX7 Forum,Would we?..RETED,Thanks,I never thought about the Coil Impedance Issue.I thought if the MSD6A could handle the stock coil then the stock ignitors could handle the Blasters..so,Ok..I am gonna Pass on this "mod" ..seeing as it won't Be Reliable. But I will stick with my MSD and Stock Coil Set-up.as it has been working for TWO seasons with NO issues. Thanks For the Input Gentlemen,..And you too..TED!(ribbin ya Big Guy!)

You have misunderstood a very old expression, plus you've applied it outside the topic. Most people won't get any improvement from "upgrading" the coils, so for most people there's no point in doing it. This should not be hard to understand...

YES..because they would think they can Do better. It's a "man" thing..like Tim Allen..you see something and you Wanna Crack it open and find out what makes it Run and do something that "you Think" will be better..If Cars Couldn't be Modified then there would be alot of People out of work!.No Auto Shows,No Racing Beat.No Mazdatrix,,,And ****..NO Car BABES!..That's the Beauty of STOCK.They make it Basic..what you have,is a Block of wood.It is Up to you if you want it to Remain just a Block of Wood,or tuirn it into a unique Carving..Me?,I've got my Knife out..,Sounds to me like you are going to Stick to your Block of wood!..I do thank you for your opinion though. That is the Heart of the Forum.Opinions equal Ideas.Ideas turn into Modifications..Modifications turn into Posts of Guys Cars that are Oggled by Guys like you and me,asking If we can Do this and that to their Vehicle. If we don't ask,we don't know...I don't want to Make Costly mistakes Either. My life is one BIG BUDGET..I'm trying to Keep the car as a hobby.,So I asked. I got my info and I am Moving on..See ya..Thread closed!

Every car I own is modified. That being said I only do mods that are worthwhile.
