model check

Last night I picked up what is supposedly an 88 RX-7. I say supposedly because it has an s5 interior and front bumper but the build date on the door says November of 87.

I am wondering is it common for people to swap in entire s5 interiors?

The car also has 5 bolt wheels with 4 piston from calipers and a moonroof. Does this mean it is a GTU model?

It was built in 87 but sold as a 88. mine is a 87 but the date on the door is late 86. Usually if its the last few months of the year the car companys just say the car is next years.

Oh I know about that,

but an 88 model should still have an S4 interior right? I used to have an 88 RX-7 and the interior was S4 on it, but for some reason this car is all S5, and it also has S5 bumpers and tailights. I can see swapping the body panels, but I am wondering if its common for soemone to swap an entire S5 interior or if maybe some of the 88's came with S5 interiors? Thanks guys

The car has mouse belts?

Its more likely someone swapped VINs, than swapped interiors

Automatic or belts that move from the A pillar to the B pillar when you close the door and turn the key on.

Nope it has manual belts, but it has the newer gauges and the hard plastic dashboard instead of the softer material covering that my old 88 had. I will have to get some photos up to show you guys.

If it has an S5-type interior with manual belts, I'd bet you have at least the interior from a Canadian model, given where you live. Also, didn't the Canadian cars have different interior color schemes than the U.S. models? Could be that's the explanation.

Actually, there is more soft plastic in the S5 interior than in the S4. The shifter surround and radio bezels are soft rubber in S5 and hard plastic in S4. The dash itself is pretty much the same material between the two series.

Good call it very well could be a Canadian model. Is there a good site I can find to breakdown the vin code to see where it was made?

This car has a light grey interior (seats, carpeting, door panels) with a black dash, center console and steering wheel. Outside is red.

Grey was not available as a S5 color so you don't have a S5 interior.

All steering wheels were black.

It sounds like you just have a S5 radio surround and possibly the dash pad dash (since the black dash pad was also on the 10thAE in 1988 as well as the S5 models), but probably not even the gauge surround is S5.

So in other words... someone swapped or painted the dash pad and put in a S5 radio/logicon surround and swapped a S5 bumper on.

Hardly a S5.
