+3. Clutch is slipping. Check out http://auto.howstuffworks.com/clutch2.htm for an explanation. On a side note, check you're slave cylinder. Mine was trash and didn't retract all the way, which lead to my clutch never fully engaging, which made me think mine was slipping. Turned out the clutch was fine, but oh well, the ACT was going in now!

yep my clutch went out 3 months ago, was doing the same thing but only when i hit 5th gear, would rev up to 5k or so then catch and drop to 2k and i would start hauling ***, this eventually led to a white cloud coming from the rear of my car, and my 5 yr old smelled 'pretzels' burning LOL hes funny but it did kinda smell like that, i wouldn't drive it, or like me, you will be rolling backwards down a hill into a parking lot calling a tow truck to take it to the shop where you were planning on going a week ago without the $75 tow charge...

+1 on slave cylinder, mine was also gone, it looked okay until button up then they bumped it and it started leaking everywhere, its like 30 bucks and really easy to bleed (or so they told me not much of a clutch repairman myself)
