material used in the shift lever...rubber epoxy?

so one day i was driving around, and when i went to upshift, the **** completely came off and i was left with the with the circular base with 3 bolts and the nub! so i loooked at the innards of the shift handle where it flares below the **** and the inside had some dry rotted rubber epoxy (so it looks like). anyways my buddy said he could weld the handle to the nub, but everyone knows even that wouldnt keep it from wobbling because the innard of the handle needs to fit flush onto that nub. anyways i was wondering if anyone can suggest what kind of material to secure the handle to the nub, or give some info on if the nub is supposed to attach to the base and the handle is its own entity. i tried searching but to no avail.

So your shifter broke at the shift ****? If you want a new shifter instead I have an S4 shifter. Otherwise i don't know what to tell you, except that it shouldn't do that.

Sounds like some sort of vibration dampning system.
I have a stock shift lever at home and it appears to have a small roll pin that I've been meaning to investigate. Wouldn't surprise me if it came apart after knocking out the pin to reveal a rubber sleeve like you describe.

In any case, better/safer/easier to just replace rather than repair, I should think.

I believe the "nub" you refer to is actually just the top of the lower half of the lever assy, i.e. the pivot ball and actuating rod/plastic bearing.
That is certainly just a dampening system and it's time for a new lever.

Exactly..anti Vibration Crap..some Shifters rattle some don't ..some fall apart..honestly For the Ten bucks you are gonna Spend Puttin Epoxy and stuff back on that old shifter, you would be better off to Buy one at a Wrecker's or on the Forum(used parts section)..Another suggestion is:it is now time to think about a Shorththrow shifter..Ebay special..

I had a friend who's S5 shifter came off like that

He just bought a new shift **** and put it on the little nub sticking out of the trans and kept driving, with his "Ultra Short Shifter"*

* - I know it's not a real short shifter because it doesnt modify the 'under-throw'
