Question Massive Vibration

i have an 86 gxl just fixed an oil leak (front cover gasket) start the car and it vibrates like crazy! happens at all RPM's don't notice anything strange cranking just when it starts, haven't tried to move it yet sounds too unhealthy. anyone know of anything that could cause this?? i am missing 1 vacuum hose (2nd one down of the 3 that come out of the front of the intake manifold and runs by the water pump and to somewhere) that a friend broke and i already tried adjusting the CAS.

Thanks

Do you still have the stock clutch fan? Did you make sure all bolts are tight?

I would try plugging that vacuum hose back in first. I would then check the injectors. I got a bad vibration once when one of my injectors wasn't working.

If you are sure the CAS is correct, then check obvious things like the fan, belts and water pump first.

HOWEVER, you did follow the very specific instructions when you had the front bolt removed to avoid bearing drop, right? This means holding the eccentric in place by blocking the clutch pedal down, wedging the flywheel or wedging the clutch lever. If you did not do this, and rotated the engine or pushed/pulled on the eccentric, you may have a front torrington bearing problem.

found the problem. pulled it apart during re assembly i had trouble putting that key in the front back, gave it to a mechanic, turns out he just decided to use brute force took the bolt off and the key was still sticking out and he bent the **** out of the copper washer so i am gonna guess i need to pull the front cover again put the key back the way it is supposed to go (if its not broken) and then put everything back together again? (and change my tranny mounts cause one got broken from the shaking)

Yes you are correct, though since the copper washer is bent then chances are the front stack of bearings is also screwed up. pull the front cover once more and check all the bearings and such.

update ( i know i take forever but i am pretty busy training for nationals in rowing ( 5 hours of training a day) ok so took the front cover off and it looks like the key got stuck on the counter weight (does the key even go through the counterwieght? cause it seems pretty well fastened even without it) anyway got a new key and still wont go in so i guess i need to pull the oil pump drive gear off but i cant get the bolt off the oil pump any suggestions and anything i should know?

thanks

I'm not quite sure what you are asking...

The key on the eccentric goes through all of the stuff that mounts to it. Front hub, oil pump drive gear and CAS gear.

In order to remove the oil pump drive gear you need to remove the oil pump sprocket from the pump itself then slip the assembly (with chain) off of both shafts.

so the key just goes through the front hub oil pump drive gear and cas gear? cause i get the key slide it in through the oil pump drive gear slide the cas gear and front hub on and it still sticks out about a cm. so i just presumed it played a part in securing the counterweight in the front which would explain all the vibrations. and yeah i figured the thats how you took it off but the bolt is proving to be quite challenging is it reverse threaded or something? or do i just need to pull harder? and when i put it back is there a certain amount i need to torque it down too? (just making sure before i break something)

thanks
