mariah intakes...

http://www.mariahmotorsports.com/ has 2 different intake kits and I am confused about the difference. Mariah Cold Airbox and K&N FIPK Package 1989-1992 Turbo II & Non-Turbo (This package includes a complete, emissions legal, K&N Fuel Injection Performance Kit. a Mariah closeout panel assembly and all other necessary hardware for installation.) $353 or the Mariah Cold Airbox and Universal Air Filter Pkg 1989-1992 Turbo II & Non-Turbo (This package includes a universal K&N air filter, a Mariah closeout panel assembly and all other necessary hardware for installation.) for $212. What is the difference between the FIPK and the other?

The K&N FIPK will include an adapter for the S4 AFM. I'm not aware of K&N making a kit for the S5. Honestly, you'd be better off just ordering the closeout panel (for $120) and sourcing your own air filter that will fit within the box. It does not cost $92 for a K&N cone filter.

And if it does, I guess I haven't really been paying attention to anything.

on their web site it shows the FIPK for either 86-88 or another FIPK for 89-92

I know. I'm just not aware that K&N ever made a "kit" for the S5, though it's entirely possible. Even if they do, it's certainly not worth the ridiculous price they'd charge. For an S5, a generic cone filter with a 2.75" ID will clamp right onto the AFM. Combined with some sort of closeout panel, that's as in depth as it needs to be. Unless you feel like drilling holes and moving things around, etc, etc.

total cold air box and filter package shouldn't cost more than $50. Anything more and you're getting ripped off.

Filters alone is $50+(unless you use a cheap ebay filter made out of metel screen and paper, in which case you should be kicked for using such a thing.) And I belive this kit also has the tube to get rid of that acordian(sp?) type tube that comes with the car. I'm sure some one with this kit will shime in and say weather or not they think it was worth it.

I'm not sure of any intake systems except for extremely expensive ones that come with a tube that gets rid of the stock plastic tube.

If anyone is interested, I have the Mariah close out panel that I'd be willing to sell for $80 + shipping. I made a DIY TID that won't fit the close out panel, and I don't feel like modifying it to fit either.

I am doing a TID for my 91 TII.

Here is my cost list right now....

3" Mandrel bends SS @ 20 per bend
60 bucks plus 8 shipping.

60.00

4 silicone 3" hoses to join my pipes 40 shipped

$100.00

5.00 for black paint

105.00

6 for hose clamps

111.00

KN filter 5" wide 5" long with a three inch flange 36.00 shipped

146.00.

It gets expensive if you use good materials....

And I still have to design it.

I could have gone with 12.50 bends but they were steel...I didn't want rusting.

It would be alot cheaper if you went with 2" or 2.5 tubing.

I have done a lot of searching for the best prices and this is what I have found....

KN filters -

Mandrel bends

On the bends if you want 2.5 bends jcwhitney might be better.

Silicon hoses:

I just bought the close out and filter from mariah, the difference between the expensive one, and the cheaper one is that the cheaper one is not certified for street use (the filter, still k and n). But other than that they are exactly the same, just trying to suck more money out of you. $212 compared to $353.
