Manual Tranny rebuild

I want to rebuild my 88 NA tranny. The synchros whine alot when they are cold. It also grinds when downshifting fast (5th to 4th or 5th to 3rd or 4th to third). its also extremely notchy, like so notchy that some people drive it and it wont go into second cause they arnt used to it.... so anyways, the main thing i want to correct is that i think to front bearing is bad, it whines alot ALL the time when ever the car is moving, or whenver the clutch is out and its in neutral.... basically if the tranny is turning it whines
ive already changed the fluid

anyways where can i get a rebuild kit, i have the know-how and the tools, i just dont know what kits i need or where to get them

thanks for any info

Peace

much better off just getting a jspec tranny. most of the engine importers have low mileage ones and sell them for less than a rebuild kit

I found this to be true. Mazda does not package a "rebuild kit," so the only way really i found is to piece together one yourself by ordering all the synchros and bearings that you need. I priced out everything I needed at the local Mazda dealership, and they give me a pretty steep discount. Even so, the price was going to be about the same the J-Spec I bought which supposedly had only 15k miles on it. It seems to shift good, and is an S5 gearbox which is supposedly a little bit stronger than my old S4.

There haven't been many members who have rebuilt the tranny, therefore there isn't as much knowledge about how to do it as this is for how to rebuild the engine. Its not as difficult for the type of tranny that the RX-7 uses as most people would think. I haven't done it myself, but a guy who did sent me pictures and a writen discription of how to take everything apart and put it back together. There isn't a kit that I know of, but he took all the old bearings to a bearing shop and the sized them up and gave him new ones. It doesn't look extremely expensive unless you are replacing gears. Sorry I don't have time to post pics and stuff right now.

i did it. it wasnt hard, its just that you are putting new bearings and synchros (~$250-300) in a tranny with lots of miles on it. the gears are gonna be slightly worn, and the case is fatigued, and the stress from the new internals can cause it to tear itself apart.

in some cars thats just wat you have to live with, but for the 7 you cna get a s5 TII jspec tranny for under $200, so why bother?

If you do a search you should come across a thread that names a shop that sells rebuild kits for our transmissions. I can't remember the name, but they quoted me ~$200 for new seals, synchros, and bearings a while back. Also, you might want to buy this book:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...984322-2210533
The miata trannys, as well as the B series mazda trucks, are almost identical to our rx-7 trannys. The book also includes some useful tips in case you don't have all the tools that a professional shop might.

I've been wanting to rebuild a T2 tranny I have sitting in my garage so that I can put it in my NA, but I don't have the funds available to rebuild it, let alone buy a T2 clutch and flywheel.

EDIT:
Here is the link to the place that provides rebuild kits. The quote I got was for an NA tranny, and there is no mention of T2 trannys on their site. I really wish someone could provide us with an affordable price for T2 tranny rebuild parts.

1. Who sells an adaptor plate to fit a T5 trans. to a rotary bellhousing? I read something a few years ago about doing that using an Rx3 bellhousing.

2. I rebuilt a T5 for a 5.0 I had back in the day w/ unknown mileage and it worked flawlessly for the 60,000 or so miles I had it. Its not that hard...just take your time and clean up (dremel) the engagement teeth on the gears where the synchros mesh if needed.
