The rubber boot must be practicaly gone for actual wind to come through! Buy a new one, its a 15 minute fix even if it takes you 10 minutes to find your socket set. Theres also supposed to be a little piece of carpet-padding-type insulation in there too, on top of the rubber boot.

You do know your transmission gets warm as well and you do have a exhaust under your car that generates tons of heat and iirc the cats are right under there, especially since its a rotary. If its alot of hot air it could also be your rubber boots have deteriorated.

Oh now, wait, it's all in the tranny!!! yea!!!
Once I got as much crud as I could get out , I put new bushings and boots on. Heh, no more smoke. I then took it to a mechanic to have the tranny flushed. IT madea big difference. He was joking that he'd never seen such thick black chinky tranny fluid. I said yeah, that's the old shifter boots.
He gave me a look like I had two heads!!!
Um, bad stuff there- heat is not your friend, your tranny will not like it for long.....
If it's exaust, you're likely to pass out from Co2 poisoning while you're driving, and you might even end up being stopped by a tree.
LOL
but really, look into it, the boots and bushings are cheap, and a good idea.
