Malfunctioning Oil Pressure Gauge!!!!
Malfunctioning Oil Pressure Gauge!!!!
I have a 89 GTU and the oil pressure gauge just goes all the way to the top as soon as I start the car. Anyone have this problem or heard of it?

Try cleaning the connection from the oil pressure sender thing. Its right below the oil filler tube (round thing with a white connection on it). Alot of oil/dirt get in between the sender and the wire. Slide the plug off and clean it. If that doesnt work just buy a new gauge from the junk yard.

The problem is almost certainly not the gauge itself. It is more likely to be the sending unit (mounted just below the oil filter) or a wiring problem between the sending u nit and the gauge.
If I put the key into the "ON" position, the needle starts rising and yes it does come back down after I turn the key off. What's the significance of this???

well You got it better that me, my needle just sits at the bottom and never moves, replace the oil pressure sender unit with one from the junkyard and still nothing.
I just check my Oil level like everyother day

Be very care of problems with oil pressure readings, especially if they are low.  Verify oil pressure with a known, good mechanical oil pressure gauge FIRST!  If it reads normal oil pressure (30psi at idle, 60-70psi at 3kRPM+), then it's the sensor or wiring.
If you confirm you have low oil pressure, it's most likely the o-ring in the front cover.  YOU NEED TO TAKE CARE OF ANY LOW OIL PRESSURE PROBLEMS AS THIS WILL KILL YOUR OIL SEALS!  At the very least those oil seals will disintegrate, and worse case you'll kill all the bearings in the engine.

If you just turn the key to the on position, and do not start the engine, and the needle rises above zero, then its the probably the sending unit but not for sure. Take the connector off the sending unit and keep it from making a ground and then turn the key to on without starrting the engine. Did the needle move above zero??If it did its possible you have a short in the wiring. Its still unclear if after starting the engine, whether or not the needle returns to a respectful reading after the engine is warmed up. If you want to check the gauge for reading correct, take a 142ohm resistor and connect it b/t the wire that goes to the sending unit and a good ground. After a few minutes the gauge should read 60psi with the key on. That check is in the factory manual thats free on the internet. For true accuracy, buy a aftermarket at the store such as SunPro(cheap) and screw it into where the sending unit goes.

I agree the stock gauge is a joke I just didnt like the increments of the gauge (going from 30 to 60 to 110 annoyed me). I just got an aftermarkted electric gauge(autometer).

1) Disconnect the cable from the sender and apply ground to the cable. The needle should rise!
If not:
2) Disassemble the gauge cluster, and pay attention at how the gauge works on the backside (mechanism).
The mechanism is a needle that moves up down, when this needle moves it pushes a white plastic rectangular part. This white plastic rectangular part is the opposite of the needle that marks the oil pressure. Now if the back needle disengages from the white plastic rectangular part, the needle on the front will not move at all!
Any questions?
