making a compression guage

is there any way to make a guage to give you real time compression readings kinda like the fuel air mix guage? and where could i get some guages?

The human ear works pretty good.

When cranking the engine, listen to the compression surges in the starter gear sound.
They come in sets of 6.
RrRrRrRrR = all even compression surges in the gear noise (normal)
rrrrrrrrrrrr = no compression surges (flooded)
RrRrRrrrRrrrR = uneven compression surges (2 of 6) (bad apex seal)
RrrrRrrrRrrr = alternating strong & weak surges (low compression on one rotor)

When it's idling listen to the exhaust.
mmmmmmmmmmmmm = good
PmmmmmPmmmmmPmmmmm = bad

This trick is limited only by deafness.

or in a pinch, stick your finger in the spark plug hole, crank it at WOT and feel for even puffs(can hurt at times )

im serious btw, this works in a pinch/at the track when your mazdachecker breaks...

I don't think I've ever heard a rotary that doesn't idle like "PmmmmmmPmmmmPmmPmmmmmPmmmmmmm..." I know neither of mine ever have. I figured it was due to exhaust leaks. Is this really a bad thing?

It certainly doesnt have any direct relation to the compression.

most stock ecu fc's I've dealt with idle like that, never have I seen one with a standalone that idled that way. I'm pretty sure it's fuel delivery related, the car is old, could be old injectors not atomising fuel well or just leaking a bit, or just not quite right AFR @ idle. I'm not saying you need a standalone to not have that idle irregularity, but it seems very common and people tend to replace most of the fuel system when they go standalone.

However, most of the responses in this thread do not address the original posters question. He wants a realtime display of the pressures inside the combustion chambers. Technically, this is possible, but it's a non-trivial task. Pressure transducers would need to be fitted to each rotor housing somewhere, you would probably want it nested within the spark plug. Someone may even produce such a spark plug for engine development use, I doubt it would be cheap. You would also need a way to get the voltage and display or datalog it. Until something like this goes mainstream it will likely be beyond your reach.
