major problem for me

so im going to buy an s5 1990 rx7 vert with 122xxx,for 500, no smoking alittle of smoke on start up witch is normal i believe, first question is, the cars starts great cold an idles, next is when i went to drive it it sputter an back fired an was hesitant thru the rpms didnt not want to run rite, doesnt like to start warm i notice the previous owner gave it gas when cranking , does that have something to do with it, flooded maybe , whats an easy way 2 check the tps , an how do i know if its the cats or the injectors, or ground or the ecu, thanks for helping me out , the compression is 90 across the board but just doesnt like to run rite, i regrounded it to see it it was the ground an it wasnt., an the idle is up an down, i took the part of the exhuast off where the egr is an it started better, i know this is alot but some kind of direction would help, thanks for reading an the help if you can

500 bucks for a s5 vert with low km's hmmm sounds fishy to me, but if you checked everything and it seems to run good then i would just buy it but i dont have any advice on the qeustion your asking .

the crappy thing about it is, is that its a s5 and most of the sensors/stuff is electronic , and i heard disconnecting some sensors could take the ecu down with it ... but i wouldnt know more on that subject since mines a s4 and most of it is mechanical .

well for one make sure you do the compression test warm as well as cold.
make sure you keep an eye on the temp gauge so you know its not a temp control issue.

a backfire/sputter isnt unheard of when the motor drops a few thousand rpms quickly especially from an acceleration, but if it is a constant thing then you have an issue.
either way for 500 i would buy it.

With all that extra money you should just rebuild the engine.
When I bought my '90 S5 The motor was blown. But $2800 later.
Runs great, props to Kilo Racing in FL for the rebuild.

If you really want that car then give it the care it deserves.
And please don't snap at me for saying just to drop more money into it.
At the time when I bought mine I had the extra cash. I all too well understand the down times too.

I would start with a full intake and spider/ air hose rebuild. Most of the manuals relate hot start and hot running issues with the intake and emissions systems. I would look into that.

Good luck.

take it to a mechanic if you don't know the basics of automotive troubleshooting.

i would just rbuild it as rx7tokyo said i bought my seven for 300 bucks and i was abe to drive it home but i just knew the rebuild was better for the car!! im putting around 2500 bucks into it and in the end its going to be worth it!! just think about it honestly!!! because if you fix that you might run into other problems

Thank you rubenm199253.

If you have to extra cash just rebuild the engine. You will be better off in the long run. Then you have a reliable, working, kick *** car.

why not get it diagnosed at a shop and find out the issues with it?

Why would you rebuild and engine that you say has good compression?

So what if you rebuild the engine and have the same issue?

Take it to a shop or possibly have a forum member help you out diagnosing the problem.......

well because its better off for the car and it would be more reliable!! second there arent alot of shops that work on rotarys around here prob one or two and they charge alot!!! and if you rebuild the engine and have the same issue then you didnt check every thing right!!! when doing a rebuild your suppose to either replace or recheck EVERYTHING in your car!! he can get forum members to help him out to find out the problem but lets just say he fixes that problem and runs into another??

also for 500 bucks you shoudnt expect to get a perfectly running car!! your going to run into some major and some minor problems!!! just need to do research! and get more familiar with your car!!

It needs to be diagnosed first. " starts fine and idles " Doesn't seem like the engine is bad.. "Only when you give it gas it sputters and backfires" could be a number of things.

There are alot of shops out here in CA...Very reasonabble prices. If you have to spend the money to rebuild the engine then why not get it checked out???

Did you do any type of tuneup for the 7 yet?

ok well i took it to mazda trix an i believe he said it has a broken water seal, the reason it wouldnt start well hot was that there was water in the engine, the car was not worth rebuilding it, so fortunately i called the guy up an he took the car back an gave me my money back,, so whats gunna happen now is im gunna spendmore money an get a decent rx7, i have to give big ups to the people at mazdatrix he took a look at it for me an let me know whats what up, since im new to this whole game i want to start with a car that was taken car of an rubs well then mod it from there, the person i bought it from knew they was something up. he grounded the radiators pressure sensor or what ever it was on the top of the radiator
