If the clutch engages in third or fourth, suspect the tranny internals. In which case you will need to replace the tranny, and might as well replace the clutch assembly at the same time. Pick up a used tranny from the classified section of the forum.

It's 22 yrs. old. You can't (realistically) expect things not to break.

Don't ride on your grandpa's shoulders once you're grown up and question why his back gives out.

Good news is that they are fairly cheap and not too bad to swap out.

You can pick up another used N/A tranny for about 50$. Replace the clutch, T/O bearing, and pilot bearing while your down there.

Haha, back when I lived down in FL, their was a RX-7 graveyard I use to go to where they didn't charge a arm and a leg for parts. I bought 4 trannys for 50 bucks each. Ended up selling them to friends though.

The last tranny I bought was in Vietnam...Didn't work out so well and I wasn't able to get my money back either...
Actually, that was a terrible joke. In all seriousness though, I do think it's coming time for me to get a new NA transmission and as mentioned from another above, they can be found for about 50 bucks.
