'89 n/a. Engine is not in the car. flywheel is installed. How do I change the main pulley without damaging the torrington bearing? I can install clutch and pressure plate.

You can change the main pulley anytime you want with no fear of dislodging the bearings.
It's the pulley hub you need to be careful with.

Sorry I wasn't clear. The hub and pully are one piece. So in effect I will be changing the hub.

Sit the engine on the flywheel. Nothing can move if you do that. Then remove the front hub.

For all those who NEVER ever read the FSM ENGINE section. (not directed at the thread owner at all).............there is a procedure there for determining if the torrington bearing has shifted or not. Read book. Measure per book.
