MAF Sensor cleaning?

I tried several times posting but it never came up? I heard K&N air filter oil can collect on the MAF sensor wire causing idle problems, and to clean the wire using carb cleaner. Where is the wire-all I see is a cone?

There is no wire in the air flow meter. There is a carbon track in the interior.....but no wire.

Hmmmm..ok. I heard there was either a 'wire' or 'wire grid', but what I heard was generic on a cartalk show. So I'm guessing then you cant or dont need to clean the 'carbon track' (whatever that is?).

You'd cut the RTV from around the black *D* shaped cover and remove it by prying the edges up with a tiny common screwdriver. There you'll see the carbon track. Radio Shack has a aerosol can of fluid that is for cleaning electrical devices. PCB board's that is.

alot of newer cars have a "hotwire" maf and that might cause them problems but as for us i wouldent worry about it.

Ok, thanks. I dont remember a 'D' shape cover so I guess I'll pull it out again maybe next weekend. HAILERS, sounds like you cleaned yours before. You recommend cleaning it or just leave as is?

Leave it alone. The cover is black. It is in the shape of the letter D. It is approx four inches long/wide. Pure black plastic cover with a bead of clear RTV around the edges to seal it and hold it in place. Can't miss it when looking at the afm.

he is talking about hot wire mass airflow meters, this problem does not apply to our cars, i would suggest disregarding all of this.

oiled filters can wreak havoc on current model cars, i have seen K+N filters tear up transmissions. they even cause problems with diesel engines by coating the intake temp sensor with oil causing them to read improperly and cause drivability problems, in some rare cases engine failures.

How does a K&N tear up a transmission? They're not adding *that* much power, are they?

For reference, the S4 has a flapper door AFM (door gets pushed open by airflow, the farther the door is open, the more fuel needs to be added). The S5 has a cone type AFM (the faster the airflow, the farther the cone gets pushed back).

the filter soaks the MAF sensor hot wire and sends a wrong signal to the PCM, both the PCM and the TCM(trans control module) are one in the same and use many of the same signals to calculate shift points.
