Would be better to upgrade your radatior if reducing temps is your goal. However, who cares about the underhood temps? I would be more worried about watchng the water/oil temps.

If you want to lower underhood temps you would have to some how study the airflow thru the engine bay. Maybe run ducting to increase that.

What's the heater got to do with this?

If you want to lower underbonnet temps, put a vent in the bonnet. Hot air rises, so give it somewhere to go.

Where do you think the heater gets hot air?? Coolant... Turn on the heater and draw heat away from the coolant and you'll lower your coolant temp. LOTS of V8 guys do this when sitting at stop lights and stuff to keep temps down.

If you have to turn your heater on to cool your engine you have a cooling problem. Just because they do this it does not mean it is right.

I would turn the heat on to cool the engine if it was in the process of overheating as a last ditch effort while slowing.

The best way to reduce UNDERHOOD temps is to fabricate a sheild that covers the bottom of the engine bay. Do this and have two slits, one on either side of the engine bay at the back open. I would not recomend angling them outward, towards the side of the car, if you hang your arm out the window. I say this because if you do you will singe your arm. That's how hot and effective this system is.
