Looking to start tuning...
Hey everybody, I'm looking to start tuning my S4 N/A
I recently looked at Digital Tuning and noticed they offer a solution for the N/A with the Rtek Stage 2. It offers many cool things that I'd like to start messing with, and it is a good price for someone of my age! (19). To go with this I know I'm going to need a wideband. Now here is where I don't know what to do! Every company offers a different solution, aiming to do the same thing. I just want something cheap and effective to get me to my goal - a little more power and fuel economy. I hear its possible to get close to 200hp out of an N/A with intake and exhaust mods (I have those!)
So with the Rtek I know I will be using a Palm hand held device to tune, I have no problem with that. Its like the poor mans Apexi PFC. Now with this, Rtek also accepts a certain wideband (Zeitronix) with a seperate software package available.
the good:
both can be controlled by one palm unit
both can be easily integrated into one device so it is cleaner in the car
the bad:
only one can be used at a time, unless two palms are used(thats dumb)
can be a pain to open and close the seperate softwares and try and tune..
The other option is to use my laptop, find a palmOS emulator, and use both zeitronix and the pocketlogger software on the laptop. the problem with this is now i have a bulky laptop always in my car, and trying to keep that still while driving can be a challenge...
What other options are there out there? I'm poor. **** poor. Going to have to save a good portion of winter for the items, and install them in spring. School is killer and makes me poor
If you think a more expensive solution is worth it, please explain why. But keep in mind I do have a limit!!

I have the zeitronix wideband and a rtek 2.1
You can connect the zeitronix into the Rtek so when you datalog from the rtek, it will show air fuel ratio also.
Or you can hook up the zeitronix to a laptop, and log rpm, boost, egt, air fuel ratio. While also at the same time using the rtek with a palm pilot to log timing, boost, rpm, misc.
If you want a cheap reliable palm, get a m series or equivalent, but do not get the T3, it will give you connection problems.
the way I used mine is I hooked up the linear output from the zeitronix into the rtek ecu, program the ecu to see the input so when I datalog with the palm pilot, my A/F ratio will also show in the palm log. There is no point really to use the zeitronix to log anything unless you spend more money on their EGT probe, and Boost sensor. Other then that, logging from the palm is more ideal.

That logger pocketlogger sells is just if you only want to datalog the zeitronix on the palm only. Like if you dont have a laptop to use the software zeitronix supplies you with.
If you do get the zeitronix wideband, they already have their own software for datalogging their product, you can download it from their website. If you want to datalog with the Rtek, the only data that will get logged when used in conjuction with the zeitronix is the a/f ratio.
You dont need the ZT software basically

I think I understand. I think I will keep everything on the palm unit, that way it can be kept in the car at all times, I dont have to worry about moving a laptop around when a passenger comes aboard, and I can monitor anytime i want.
So I have to solder the zeitronix right into the rtek (the 0-5v port?) and then it will be displayed on the palm?
Thank you for your help, I am a computer guy, but for some reason this car stuff just seems so damn complicated.
I know you said the T3 has connection problems, but are there any other units with a rechargeable battery? This is going to be a permanent fixture in my car So keeping it charged is going to be important, and a hassle I dont want to have to worry about. Any of the older T series?

Lots of good info in there... I am using a PLX WB and just logging it on the palm through the ATP input on the ecu...

You mean rechargeable as in built in battery?
The zire 71 is a reasonable unit. I read about any problems users are experiencing with it and the rtek, plus it has a lcd color screen which makes viewing at night time a whole lot better lol.
The T and T2, I dont know if it has connection problems.
You can use almost any wideband in conjunction with the Rtek, its just that the wideband has to have a linear (0-5v) output for datalogging.
