looking for some insight from s5 TII drivers
So I finally broke in my rebuild and I just started boosting. Having never driven a TII hard before I dont know how they are supposed to feel, but I can say I was a little dissapointed with how it felt. It makes me think there might be a problem somewhere. One thing i noticed was that the turbo was very loud..is that normal? I also never hooked up the pipe from the air pump to the cat (completley forgot to get one when i couldnt find it). Im just tryin to figure out if its running right..which is hard to find out over the internet.

stock TII's are pretty slow. low 15's stock i think. and thats brand new, not with 100k miles of beatens and crappy oil...
also, you should hear the turbo spool up over the stock exhaust. but if its really loud, then you might be pushing a bit more than stock boost. also, with an intake it will be slightly louder.
dont worry about the air pump pipe to the cat unless you need to pass emissions. most people just remove it and block it off anyways.
just remember. most stock cars that you can buy for around 2000 dollars, are going to be slow...its the potential of a TII that makes it one of the best late 80's early 90's cars around.

I have driven Johny Zoom's 70-something thousand mile unmodded 10AE, which was in very good condition, and I don't recall hearing the turbo at all, just a little bit of whine from the transmission. It drove a lot like a nonturbo 3000GT or a 3rd gen V6 Eclipse, both of which are 15 second cars.
you probably have boost leaks. small boost leaks may increase the turbo whine a bit but large ones can make full hissing sounds.

I had a 89 T2 stock port rebuild with intake 3" cat and RB rev2 exhaust... wasn't that quick. went for a ride in a guys 89 that had 80k on the whole car with full RB exhaust it was just a fast. just finished building my vert. j-spec, K&N drop in, both cats, single exit 2.5" catback. it is slightly faster than both previous cars lol.
I don't know. mine and my buddy's old 87s with intake and exhaust would throw you into the seat at 8psi. thinking about it now, back in highschool a friend had a stock 87 that seemed quicker than my s5 now. maybe it's the twin scroll lol

did you replace the vacuum line to the pressure sensor, there's a restrictor in the line, just search restrictor pill for the part number, but it makes a night and day differance with accelleration, i've been there before, also double check your charge pipes could be a leak somehwhere the turbo shouldnt be that loud, you can run the vacuum source for the WG actuator to the intake manifold, i found this made quite the differance in boost spool and accelleration

This thread is a great reminder. I can hear my turbo spinning also. It's my first turbo so I'm not sure what is acceptable and what isn't. With my setup there is a definite difference between a vacuum leak and my normal/abnormal turbo spin noise (for lack of a better description). I've left vacuum hoses needing more tightening and gotten a "whistling" reminder.
I've got a 4" TID with an Apexi Power intake cone and 3" exhaust with presilencer instead of cat
I'm reading up on restrictor pills now...

if you're not used to driving a turbo car, than the turbo will sound kinda loud.
stock t2 with stock precat and stock flywheel feels like its towing a boat or something.
also make sure the throttle actually opens, they are complex and once it wears out they dont open, especially s5's

We purchased ours new and it remained stock until 2002 when it received a boost increase to 11-11.5 lbs. Makes a big difference.
